Im getting this message when I try to run the thief 2 installer on windows 8.1
the procedure entry point appcachelookup could not be located in the dynamic link library
C:\windows\system32\urlmon.dll
Is this common? how can I overcome it?

You're going to have to be more specific than "the" Thief installer. The one on the CD? Which CD release? The GOG installer? The Steam installer? The Tafferpatcher installer?

the CD installer (ie from the original game disc)

do a manual install via TafferPatcher.
