I'm set as narrator in a Thief-themed Pen & Paper RPG session on January 5th, 2007. The background ist about 70 pages, consisting mostly of texts I retrieved from the (
http://www.btinternet.com/~sneaksiethiefsie/) Keeper Library. (I can't redistribute this since I don't have the permission of the author yet.) Furthermore, I use the (
http://www.amazon.com/Story-Engine-Universal-Christian-Aldridge/dp/0966073681/sr=8-13/qid=1165694925/ref=sr_1_13/002-3396399-9979264?ie=UTF8&s=books) Story Engine Universal Rules by Christian Aldridge (simple yet elegant rules, emphasis on storytelling). The timeframe for this session is relatively short: 3-4 hours.
I'm still looking for a good premise to introduce players to the setting. So I'm asking you: if you had 3-4 hours to tell a tale for 2-3 players which takes place in the City of the Thief-games, what would be your first idea for an exciting scenario? This can be anything from a bank robbery to fixing a power station in Shalebridge. :D

I'd say, don't tell them that they're witless guards with a theif sneaking around. make it feel like a murder/knock-out mystery... they're walking around, suddenly they see an NPC just laying in a corner, and they must now find the thief, who will outwit them at every turn. Make them think it's a ghost or something.

Or even better... a rat. (Must've been rats) lol

That wouldn't make for a satisfying conclusion. :p
Perhaps the seven steps for adventure design procedure by Paul Mitchener are helpful here:
* Choose a theme.
* Think of a plot.
* Why are the player characters involved?
* Why don't the player characters immediately go to the relevant authorities?
* What happens if the player characters lose or do not get involved?
* Design locations.
* Design non player characters.

Oh, I realise that. I was just cracking a joke.

Why not make it new members of the thief's guild and they have to pass challengers and tests before the're accepted. Or you could go on one of these R.P.G sites like Roleplay On Line ((
www.rpol.net)) and see if there are any ongoing thief games. I know that there are a few. One is marked Thief but that's been set up as private for now.

How about making one player the Thief (Garrett?) and the others the Guards. Set the Theif and objective and let the others attempt to foil him/her?

Oh lookie theresie, another PnP thief RPG maker. :sly:
I think we could work together, heres my msn: samgullman@hotmail.com
Add me and i'll hand you my progress, as well as get yours. My progress is 40 pages, mostly a complete ruleset and many parts of background inspired by all my experience with thief. I have also of course the library things, have collected them in a separate map for now. As well as all the other goodies ive found around the internet, every thiefy picture, all the sounds, music, fonts and glyphs, maps.. other small things.

Thanks for the compliment but I'm not a RPG maker. I'm just a thief who steals intellectual property of smarter people and repackages it into some inept, half-assed, cliched pile of confusion. :eww:
I don't have msn but I can contact you via eMail. Just know that I have not written a single line of text on my own so far. I didn't create a new ruleset. The only thing that could be of marginal interest for you is a character sheet by me for the Story Engine system. And even that contains of images I downloaded from the net.
@ Holy Thief
Good suggestion. I had something like that in mind. (Guess which fan mission I plan to rip-off.)
