I need your help guys. I have this terrible fear from spiders, I mean whenever I play those Thief 1 missions which have spiders. Those crawling insects just creep me out. Bcos of this fear, I haven't been able to play STRANGE BEDFELLOWS, THE MAW, THIEVES GUILD. I was able to kill the giant spider in BREAK FROM THE CRAGSCLEFT PRISON as it was miles away from me. I killed it by shooting a broadhead arrow through the gap between the lift & the floor. I just want to know how I can overcome this fear of mine. Don't u guys think that those crawling, disgusting beats were terrible ? :erm:

Yes I do; however, sinnce I learned how they are programmed to detect Garrett, I can approach them on my own terms.
Basically, what you have to do is allow your immersion to be ruined a little and see the spiders as pixels with programmed rules of behavior.
Whether or not you can or are willing to do that, here's a secret:
They see with their butts! Wherever their butts are pointed is where they are looking. Stay in front of them, stay quiet, and you will be in charge of the situation.
Also, learning the layouts of the missions will broaden your spectrum of possible approaches to getting through those missions.

Yeah they're pretty freaky. I remember the first time I saw a bunch of the little ones running at me  There should be a way to change them into butterflies or something in the code lol.

My first experience with a spider in Thief was obviously Bafford's Manor, after diving into the well, and swimming under that little cleft thing. Inside the mini cave there were a few spiders makin some noise by the first Thief treasure chest I've seen. They didn't really scare me as much as draw me even further into the suspension of disbelief. Good and wholesome stuff.

Zombies, haunts, ghosts, love em. Spiders? Ick. I try to get them from a distance too if I can.

I prefer to drown spiders, if possible. Otherwise, they get an arrow from a safe distance. Either way I don't like to leave them alive.
While I was once able to KO one of the small spiders with the blackjack, I don't recommend it.

Since I can't play if there's even a chance I might be surprised by a spider, I replace the model (spid*.bin) and texture files with some other model and texture files. Sometimes I get polygons flying all over the place, but mostly that makes the spiders invisible.
I guess none of the Dromedites have the phobia, otherwise they would have produced a mod ages ago that replaces the spiders with something else.

Either I managed to play through the whole of Thief without ever noticing that (which is unlikely since I have come face to face with them and been seen several times), or you have totally misunderstood the anatomy of a spider.

The first time when I know that the spiders see with their backs, I was totally confused! But now I understand that they are not programmed very well with their rotating habit. Their vision angle do not change while rotating.
Spiders are still one of my nightmares in Thief series. Whenever I see them charging towards me I just press Esc.

That is true actually, their FOV does not appear to change when they rotate while idle.
