Help needed. Lets Play Video Recording Issue - by SlyFoxx

OK...so I'm trying to do a Lets Play.
I'm using LoiLo as my game recorder.
My vid card is Radeon HD 5400.
I'm running T2 New Dark.
In game things look fine but the recorded video is a mess.

If I run Thief in window mode the video is pretty normal except in game things look about 30% less bright with the resulting recording much less than that...similar to how screen shots always look darker.
So that's a wash.
The video card has lots of setting options but I'm clueless about what all they mean or if they'll be of any help.

That looks like an RGB to YUV conflict.
What codec and container was it recorded in? I'm not familiar with LioLo.
It's possible it has its own proprietary one which Media Player doesn't like for whatever arcane reason
Check whatever output settings the recorder has, if any, and maybe try it in their own player or another one like VLC which is harder to upset.

Cool...something to go on. Thanks.
By the way even the thumbnail for the video looks corrupted.

If you cant get your software to play nice with thief (and you have a spare 100 something dollars). You can always give the elgato game capture a go. I was forced to do so for my shadow warrior lets play because of frame rate issues. It will capture whatever is on your computer screen and has no hit on frame rate because its a piece of hardware. Not perfect in all situations but thats why I keep bandicam installed.

I use VirtualDub for the odd bits of video that I do when I'm unable to explain what it is I'm doing when I'm testing that's causing a bug. There are a load of tutuorials on youtube that are very helpful.

Arrarrgh...I let virtual dub chew on the raw footage and it swelled 8 times in size while making the video ten times worse....what the %$#@!
OK clearly I have some more homework to do.:o
EDIT: a compromise has been found. Use dromed to relight the map with more ambient light so the video looks brighter.

Heh. Sounds like the long way around as work-arounds go. But I guess it's academic if the other direction looks like an impenetrable thicket.
Hopefully it doesn't hurt the lighting
I haven't figured out why Thief comes up really dark. Some of it is people's eyes just adjusting to it better at full screen than watching it in a player. But it does seem that recorders capture it without paying any attention to its internal gamma setting. I suspect it's an old crude gamma that sits right at the end of the chain and just adjusts the video driver and then resets it when you quit.
It sounds like virtual dub wasn't compressing at all, which is something that can take some doing. Or maybe you picked the wrong codec. Or the wrong settings. Also hours of fun.
It's something you have to grapple with eventually, unfortunately. Especially doing it on the cheap. Truth is compressed video doesn't like being adjusted and recompressed at the best of times. Which is why most methods either describe no editing at all or giant video files working down to smaller ones.

Oh it seems like VD (ok ok relax with the obvious jokes M'kay) has it flaws.
But I have found a work-around and have 14 more days to LP the lot of my genius. OK, OK my lack of genius. And if I can't work that fast I'll have to shell out a few bucks.
Hey, money I've got. Talent...that's up for interpretation. :cheeky:

Heh. Well you never know. It could be great.
Well for the sake of it virtual dub can do just about anything if used properly. If you're trying to shift video from one form to another there really aren't too many pitfall free shortcuts. You have to wrestle with the details of the codecs sooner or later or things won't do what you want (and even then...). VD it a bit of an education in some respects as people often can have a good ride with something a bit automatic for a while, but one day the black box will fail them and they'll have to find out why.
If you've got money you could pick up something like Vegas or just get a Creative Cloud account for a couple of months and play with the proper stuff.
