I've found my way into Arbez's labs and located a key the upper floors, but I can't figure out where to use this key.
Some people seem to be having trouble with this. You need to
use it on a lockbox that is mounted on the wall at the bottom of the stairs.
:)

Another question.
How do you kill Arbez? I dispatched the two servant fairly easily and got down the stairs. I laid a trap of an explosive device with 6 mines on top of it on the stairs. A noisemaker got him to walk down the stairs. He walked right onto it and laughed it off. I then fired 12 fire arrows plus 2 gas arrows at him and he still survived! Holy water arrows seem to have no effect on him. Is this guy immortal or something?

With difficulty. I tried slashing him with my sword loads of times and that didn't work like you said it's like his immortal. So i cheated :erm: got meself loads of invisibility potions and slashed away at him with my sword until he died it took a lot of stabs i can tell you that. I am sure there must be some other/proper way to kill him but i can't find it.
One flashbomb...three overhead swings with the sword. Second flashbomb, three more swings. Third flashbomb, a couple more swings to finish him off. Try it on expert with two battle servants to deal with after Arbez. I switched to the blackjack for those clowns. :ebil:

Broadheads are very effective. After you shoot around 20 into him and get rid of his servant, then just hack away at him.
Finally, I got him using the sword and flashbobms. I guess since it's his sword it makes sense it would be effective.
The principal weakness of magic-users like Arbez (and many others in Thief FMs) is no melee combat ability. From a distance they are very nasty, so you need to get up close and personal with your blade.
In the case of Arbez, when I read the note, I immediately detonated a flash bomb after exiting the scroll screen, then ran back down the ramp (I did have time to blackjack the guard by the ramp) and hid out till the searching ended. After that, if you creep back up to the upper room when the fuss dies down, both Arbez and his remaining guard are facing away from you. Creep up and blackjack the other guard. Then creep up to Arbez (a moss arrow is helpful here as some magic users seem to be preternaturally sensitive...) and whack him with a good overhand strike. Then keep slashing fast till he drops. Hitting magic-users seems to disrupt their spells momentarily. If he turns around though, slide to the right.
If you should miss getting the ramp guard, use a gas arrow when you sneak back to drop him quietly, as he is facing down the ramp.
As a side note, even if a magic-user can see you from a distance, if you hide behind an obstacle he will normally move up to you to get a clean shot, at which point you can jump him with a good overhead smash and proceed to slash away thereafter.
I couldn't kill the guy either, so I came here for help. My problem was that I was using all types of explosives, and nothing worked. I used yuggothian's method with a small variation:
I panicked and missed the BJ going down stairs, so I still had two guards and Arbez to contend with. One guard was facing downstairs, so I had to use a broadhead on him. That stirred them up again, so I hid a second time. Then I went upstairs and finished off guard #2 and Arbez with a blackjack. Arbez alerted when I BJ'ed the guard, so I just went after him. I didn't count, but it was somewhere between 30 and 50 whacks.
This is an excellent FM! Nice and gritty, creepy atmosphere. Thanks, John D.:) After completing it in a couple of hours, I have gone back to try to get all the loot. That's tough, and I still have only 1662 of 2127. In the meanwhile I have amused myself by BJ'ing all the mechanists and killing all the undead, including the long train of 20 or so haunts and skullys. That took about an hour and a half. Great fun.:D Still hunting....
Arbez used to be a fire wizard, thats why any explosies or fire won´t affect him.
