You need to go back to the nursery where you found the diary. Search well. The information is on a table in the burned out nursery. You need to be IN THE PAST.
You also need to be in the Past to exit. When you have the objectives completed a new passage will open up and allow you to enter the staff tower and an elevator.

Sounds like me; I had to take a week's break before coming back to the Cradle. I got to the part just before the stairs in the Outer Cradle, and I heard the thumping sound. Tried to work up the courage to go up, but literally said "I can't do this!" and shut the power off from my Xbox. :p
