Q. I don't have thief gold. I see that EBGames/Gamestop has it for download. Should I purchase from them?
A. Recommendation: No, based on documented problems in these forums with that version by members. The main reason is because if you are running a newer machine, the ddfix patch is just about required to play thief (if nothing else allows you to play, or you want to use it for its fixes) and ddfix refuses to run with the download version.

Confirmed. The resources are encrypted and cannot be accessed, meaning no DDFix, no DromEd, no access to any of the sound files, nothing. Boycott this product.

That is quite unfortunate.:( I would complain, but I doubt gamestop/eb games would listen to me.

Alternative way of fixing game locking due to more than one CPU (or hypertransport?)
To fix it for Thief 2:
modify "Target" in your shortcut
C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /C start /affinity 1 thief2.exe
to dedicate the first CPU core to the game (or "/affinity 2" for the second, and so on)
I'm not sure if the CPU is the issue for me, but it's a likely possibility. I'm running Vista and the game installs fine, but either hangs automatically and stops responding, bringing me back to my desktop.
Or it gets into the menu screen,, and once you accept the mission it loads a few seconds, then hangs there and does the same thing.
If it is the CPU, can you explain a little more what I'd need to do to make it only run on one?
thanks for getting back into this FAQ though.. I think a lot of problems with Vista are coming up, and the FAQ that I've been trying to get answers from didn't help.
:cheeky:
also,
any advice for making Dark Project work on either XP or Vista would be awesome.. because I've never been able to make it work on any computer.. It always crashes a few minutes after walking around in the first level.
(I know this all has probably been pounded into countless forums, but I still can't get a good solution.)

Yes, and it's been discussed extensively on these forums actually. However, the "good solution" problem you mention is unfortunately always something that is unknown here because everyone has a different system. The best way to see if it's indeed the CPU or not is to just try and do the fixes and then report back. I suggest you try a single-core fix, as it sounds like that is your problem. If you are sure you have a dual-core system, then it's just about a given that you will have to do something to disable one of the cores. Also, the best place to discuss problems with thief is actually the Legacy technical help forum.

thanks.. sorry if I don't know where to post the appropriate questions..
This is a rather large and labyrinth-esque place. Any specific thread to go to to get a step by step to setting it to one CPU?
I am
not the computer guru. <blush>
Oh ho!
Well.. The problem was the dual processors, and before when I tried the solution they have on Thief-The Circle, it didn't work because apparently it didn't think I had administrator access to that
But- For whatever reason, it worked this time. And as far as I can tell so far, that was all I needed in order to make it work.
If it helps anyone, there's the how-to . (

It's okay.. It's just us veterans of the forums get a bit vexed when new people come in without even searching the forums before posting (viewing the FAQ aside.)
Did you try all the fixes from the FAQ? There's stuff about disabling the second core in there. You could also try the DDFIX thread in the legacy tech forum, if all else fails. If it's help in actually doing it, that's different. I'd be happy to help if I can.

For getting the games to work on Vista:
Yeah, especially for Vista, it needs to be mentioned up front that you must be the Administrator first. :)

Yeah.. For whatever reason it didn't believe I was.. even if I only had one account on the computer.
In any case, I'll see how it goes, I will come back to Sneaky over there when I brave myself up to try and instal Dark Project.
