The problem is that ddfix doesn't work with his copy of thief gold (that's my understanding anyway), and he was already having issues with thief gold, so he decided to just get dark project. But your right, he could just used the merged version with his friend's copy.

It's my understanding that DDFix didn't work with the stock downloaded copy, but that it
did work after he used his friend's copy to fix the downloaded one. Back on Sept. 18th, he posted;

All right, here's what I did:
I contacted one of my friends and told him about my situation. He let me borrow his copy of Thief Gold so that I could merge his installed files with mine. Now my copy works. I was able to get DarkLoader, Widescreen, and Hi-res stuff all working as well.
I would even go so far as to suggest that straight out copying of his friend's Thief Gold discs wouldn't be morally wrong, since he paid for the program. I know this site probably can't officially approve of such an action, but to me, that doesn't consitute piracy in any way. Nobody is getting something without having duly paid for it and the company isn't losing a sale. He's just getting what he paid for and what the company
should have delivered in the first place.
Unless the download carried a warning specifically stating that their copy of the game would be less compatible than a physical, store-bought copy, I'd say that the company who sold the download is the dishonest one.

I know that, rekrul. You didn't need to rehash what was already said, that's why I said he could still use the merged copy of his friends:
