I'm playing Undercover for the first time around and I managed to do the whole unlocking the portcullis thing and opening the portcullis which has the talisman behind it. I've read the wall builder's prayer but I still can't touch the talisman(It just damages Garret). Is there something that I've missed?

You need to have the builder's hammer 'equipped' when you read the prayer. You can get it in the priest's room on the basement level (not the sub-basement, but the level just down the stairs from main sanctuary). If you go down the big staircase and make a hard right, it should be the first room on the right - the one with the window.

I figured it out. It turns out I was too far away when I read the prayer. So all I needed to do was get closer to the Talisman and then read it.
Now I'm up to that accursed Cathedral, too many zombies:eek:

If you're not opposed to using a sneaky engine exploit, you can get those zombie numbers waaaay down. You might want to wait to try this on a later run-through of the mission, but, if you want an empty cathedral...
Grab a hammer and take out all the haunts (running at them before lobbing it at their heads will bring them down quicker; once they're dead, it doesn't register as a kill). Hide each body. Then, pick up your trusty hammer again and lure the zombies, one by one, out to the grassy area with the fountain. You can hammer each zombie into sleep mode, and there should be enough room out there for seven or eight zombies, if you start behind the fountain and down each one in a good spot. If you put one in a bad spot, you can always walk over to them and "re-activate" them...nothing to fear when you've got your hammer.
After a while, there might be one or two zombies left in the Cathedral, or St. Yora's, but you should then be able to draw them to a place you won't be walking directly over, and take them out.
There you go, you've got your run of the Cathedral. Not so scary anymore, huh? :)

Geez, just get up on the second or third level and flash bomb them. That kills them quick, then your off to loot the place. :o)

Well, yes. You can also run around with your sword and whack everything to bits. The point of the hammer trick is that it doesn't use up equipment, or generate kills. And once you get good at it, it's fun. :sly:

Ok, got past the Cathedral and now I have an even bigger problem. As far as I can see there is no way to pass Escape!
There's a pagan beasty every two metres.
Is there some sort of trick to this mission or do I just run and hope not to die?

"Escape!" is a test of character. If you just want to move the story along, you can follow the (
http://www.thief-thecircle.com/guides/keeperchapel/Escape/) Easy Path laid out in the Chapel's walkthrough. You won't feel like much of a thief if you do, though.
Better to just not let your frustrations get the better of you. It's a purposefully tough mission, but by no means impossible. If you can get out of there on your first run with life & limb intact and a semi-decent wedge of loot, you can feel justifiably proud.

Just take your time and look around. Theres alocoves and ledges and trees and everything you need to get away. Go slow and look everywhere, theres eqiupment and areas to get away from enemies all around.
