Well I got stuck in the demo, but what I played of this was fantastic! They really nailed the "essence" of Hexen imo. I hope they finish it! Just wondering, cos I couldn't see anything about it, but isn't this in danger of being shut down? I mean Hexen is a commercial IP after all? I know iD are pretty modder-friendly, but Zenimax might have other ideas... Or does someone else own the Hexen IP?

Raven, Shirley.

Er, whoops. That's what happens when I forget to actually check the dates on these posts. At least they've seen their project through enough to release a public demo.
Only thing is, I don't have Doom 3 or any id Tech 4-based game for that matter...Doom 3 just didn't interest me that much. Maybe I'll pick it up if I find it on sale for dirt cheap during the holidays or something.
And if Raven still has the Heretic/Hexen IP rights...why don't they make a new game in the setting after all these years? Something like Heretic II with Hexen's distinctive blue/green mana, weapon, and class system would be nice, especially if they smooth out Heretic II's really jerky, kludgy movement, mostly because even today, it would still feel distinctly different from a lot of today's games. (Unfortunately, Heretic II is a bitch to run hardware-accelerated on modern hardware, and there are no source ports for it unlike many other id Tech 2 games.)

As a bonus, buying Doom3 will also allow you to play (

Activision (Raven's parent company) own the IP, I looked it up on the US Patents and Trademarks Office database site the other week.

Wouldn't it be fairly obvious? Activision highly likely didn't see the franchise as profitable enough, so they put it in moratorium.

Doom64 kicks ass. The TC version especially.

It wasn't obvious when I didn't know about the "Activision owns Raven Software" bit.
Goddamn Robert Kotick...and to think that Activision was founded to get away from the likes of Ray Kassar...

Activision has owned Raven for 13 years. Where the fuck have you been?
NamelessPlayer on 1/12/2010 at 02:52
I've noticed that they tend to published Raven-developed games, but just never noticed the outright ownership until now.
I don't always focus on who owns what developer, just what developer made what games.
