The rank and file on the street showed remarkable restraint and discipline (perhaps in part owing to the fact that this time they were grossly outnumbered and were well aware that they were being filmed en masse). Safety first was certainly the choice of strategies.

No fatalities, thank the generic supernatural ueber being(s).

The Chief and senior officers will be in for a rough ride owing to their apparent lack of foresight and planning. While the violence seems to have been instigated and perpetuated by a relatively small core of "professional" agitators, some allegedly known from the G8 / G20 riots in Toronto, the Chief can't blame them for his own unpreparedness.


Rule #1 in crowd control. Don't encourage crowds to gather in the first place.

I was greatly surprised by the riots - I had this idea (cemented by a few visits) that Vancouver was altogether more mature/laid back than most of the cities in the states. And yet I'm not aware of a sports-related riot ever happening in modern times in my city.

I mean, the WTO riot was pretty stupid, but it least it was over something that was arguably of national/global import, as opposed to the result of a game.

Basically, Canada just flipped over the chessboard and then stabbed the timekeeper.

As for the hockey riots, they would have rioted even if their team had won. When the Canadiens last won the cup here in Montreal (back in 93), the fans trashed a whole street. Last year when they made it to the finals and won a few games, there were thousands of people downtown; to celebrate they burned a couple of cop cars and trashed and looted dozens of stores.
