Others guarded already broken windows and had some success preventing further looting.

Still others reported for (http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/story/2011/06/16/bc-riot-vancouver-facebook.html) volunteer clean up duty on Thursday, while others left messages of solidarity and apology on the plywood panels covering the empty window frames.

However easy it is for mobs to form and for criminality to suddenly manifest, on balance more humans are more likely to do good, more often than they are to do bad. If we didn't we'd never have made it out of the caves.

It wouldn't have helped...unfortunately it is when they react based on emotion instead of training that they actually escalate situations as opposed to offer any real security. Seen it happen with my own two eyes and it sucks.

Yeah, I've seen it too once or twice when I was younger, and I expected the worst when I heard about the riot. Anyway, I was impressed with the way the Vancouver cops handled it since they were clearly unprepared. At least nothing like this happened:

Exactly.

Thing is, no matter how "civlized" you think someone is, that is always going to lose out to pure primal instinct. In this case its the herd instinct thats won out.
