Yes, some of them are sincere - Huckabee, Palin, Bachmann. All come from a religious conservative platform, and are simply pushing their own beliefs - which then encourages those rednecks who really, really really sincerely believe the stuff to seek election and platform off of the supposed "hysterical showbiz." The fact that some Republicans are cynical douchebags doesn't excuse the fact that the coalition backing them buy this shit hook, line and sinker.
That goes for the ridiculous social ideology that the abortion stance is part of, as well as the ridiculous economic ideology that shit-heads like you parrot. It's all part and parcel of a party that has given up on rationality and embraced dogma instead.

I'd argue that a lot of them are Rednecks too, but that isn't the reason I look down on them. Trying to regulate people's sexual activities is extremely intrusive. I think its even more authoritarian and statist than most of what they accuse Democrats of doing.
While I personally hold conservative views of whats acceptable sexual conduct, I don't want to anyone else to share my standards because of coercion. I'd rather they'd make that choice freely.

My opinion is to look at a layer deeper. The reason crusading nutjobs (anti-gay, anti-smoking, anti-etc) have such political power is due to a lack of education. That combined with increased government overreach means that a majority of lower-class Americans now consider one of the governments functions to be imposing their own personal intolerances onto everyone else. They also tend to vote accordingly.
Combine that with evangelical protestant beliefs, and you have the Republican base. Kind of ironic how they're always ranting about freedom and unconstitutionality when most of what they want is equally unconstitutional statism.....except its OK because its directed at THOSE kinds of people.
