Hi! I'm new here. - by Daxim

WARNING, UPCOMING THREAD WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS.Hello! I'm Daxim, mostly hanging around in the Shock forums and a great LG fan. I heard overwhelming positive comments from some of you DX players that made their way into the other TTLG forums, praising the plot and story, so I avoided the local forums and DX-M like the plague in order not to ruin my own game experience. In fact, I plan on buying the game only by the recommendation of one website (i.e. TTLG), just taking your promises and word, which is normally not sufficient for me.
I've also heard the following about Deus Ex:* It's based on the Unreal engine.
* It's slow as hell.
* Multiplayer is fun.
* AI sucks compared to Thief.
* You can have several endings.Finally, I've found enough spare time to make my first venture into the DX realm. It's about time, you'll say.

http://www.ttlg.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif Well, I'm more into even older games; UT, Shock2 and T2 are the most modern ones I own.
So I downloaded the demo off fileplanet (140 MB at one piece, phew!) and will now install and play it.

Hi!
Think of it as a good combination of Thief and System Shock. The A.I. is somewhat weak but the latest patch fixes a lot of problems with the frame rates.

Just learn the AI quirks, get the new SP patch and finish the game, then get MP patch.It's worth it.Voodoo card helps (grin).

Hey Daxim! Welcome aboard. This really is one of the greatest games I've ever played and keeps me coming back for more. The latest patches make it more than playable on most systems and I am sure you'll enjoy it. Have fun!

ANYWAY, one change of the country schema and one reboot later...
DX crashed on me. Huzzah!
Inline Image:
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/ubb/tongue.gif Inline Image:
http://homepages.compuserve.de/daxim5/load/deusexgpf.png Nyah nyah. After one run in Unreal safe mode, it worked. Slow, but acceptable. The lowest resolution is really useless, as it cuts off the game interface. So I have to play in 640*480 and low detail, which looks really ugly, but what the hey.
Meanwhile I listened to the grovy Unrealesque title music over and over. But tell me, what is this funny spinny logo? Couldn't they give the game a proper intro, or is it just in the demo so dumb and unatmospheric?

http://www.ttlg.com/forums/ubb/confused.gifAfter hammering the key setup to what resembles my triple patented Dark Engine layout, I went to the training course.
Can you say Half-Life?
Inline Image:
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif Hehe, it surely resembles the parcours in many aspects. Things that cracked me up: the doctor talking about how other trainees forgot to put on the suit
by clicking on it (yeah sure, what immersion destroyer comes next?), and Günther with the best worst German accent I've ever heard. ("Pick up ze rifle." Bwahaha!

Then I had to be stealthy to get past the two guards. Determined, I stepped forward, feeling that JC's affinity to tap dance shoes he shares with Garrett ought to be no biggie.

http://www.ttlg.com/forums/ubb/cool.gifBoy, how they taught me a lesson. After circa 10 fruitless rounds to and fro the reset switch I got really angry and stopped playing.
Next issue of this newbie's diary: end of training, first impression of Liberty Island. Don't miss it. Inline Image:

Ah yes, the good old Unreal engine errors, where it gives you a nice little call stack for you to enjoy. I once had UT crash on me and literally dump a screen sized (1024x768) error message detailing what object actually caused the crash.
The intro is shown when you start a new game, it's there and it's pretty neat (at least I think it's there in the demo, I've only played the full version). The accents, well... get used to it

http://www.ttlg.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif. If you do a search on these forums you can read all kinds of fun threads about the accents.
And stealth works a lot differently in DX then in Thief. Remember: JC was not raised by the Keepers. Stealth mostly involves preventing the enemy from getting a clear line of site on you instead of hiding in shadows and being quiet. You can distract the guards by throwing stuff around though, like potted plants and the like. It's a great game once you get into it.

Sorry the game crashed on you...
Deus Ex seems to be rather testy to some computer setups. Get it working, and you'll be glad you put in the effort.
It's best put this way: Deus Ex is the game all future games will be measured up to. The only downside is playing old favorite games (such as Halflife or Wheel of Time) will be tiresome and bland compared Deus Ex. Even great games like NOLF are harder to play.
