Being bored while waiting for my daughter to finish shopping at my local mall yesterday, I went to Gamestop and saw this game for 5 bucks. Figured for that kind of cash I'd give it a try. Went to pay and the clerk told me there was some kind of promotion on it and charged me 31 cents!
I just did a bit of research on it and it's apparently very buggy, but I noticed that there were several patches available for it. Do the patches help and is the game worth playing?

Not really that buggy - at least with the patches - i never played it without. Definitely worth playing - non linear (multiple routes through missions and mild elements of choice) and non scripted ai, much better than any other ww2 game.
There is multiplayer too but it's a bit crap as the multiplayer has been geared for arcade. The single player is very much not though and is a more stealth affair - you can also play guns blazing but even if you do, a careful approach is needed.
The first game is free also and can be downloaded.
Thoroughly recommend it.

Again, I'd highly recommend it. Definitely patch it before playing, because there are (were?) bugs in some levels which meant you'd have to start the whole level again from scratch because some documents you needed weren't spawned (and the levels are far from short).
It's one of those games which is very ambitious but not perfectly polished: your teammate AI will drive you up the wall on occasion, so I would probably stick to normal for a first run - harder skills limit your saves to 3 (or none), and you'll get very pissed off if you have to reload because one of your teammates fell off a ladder and died.
One of it's biggest strengths is the squad/equipment loadout: you get 30 odd SAS soldiers at the start of the game, all with different stats which improve with each mission they do, and depending on how much they used each skill. At the start of each campaign, you select four men and equip them with whatever gear you want/have available and then that stuff and those men have to last you until the end of the campaign, or until you get reinforcements.

The Sabre Squadron expansion pack also includes co-op gameplay (for the expansion's missions). Co-op features throughout the original H&D, but was sadly left out of the sequel.

I think people made "mods" too to add coop to (at least some of) the original h&d 2 levels also.
It's sadly not the same style coop as h&d, which plays exactly like the single player, but it's better than nothing. Mind you finding anyone willing to give it a go is a different matter - and online with randoms and the dodgy netcode doesn't exactly cut it.

HD2 has some of the best mission design of any tactical shooter out there today. The mission lifted from "The Rock" was incredible, as was the one where you go must traverse a destroyed train stuck in a tunnel. It's a brilliant game, one of my favorite my high school years.
You can also get the first one completely free online. Buggy, but worth playing especially for FREE!

The first, more like broken, but yep really worth playing.

I liked HD2, that parts I played. I couldn't finish the first mission of the second campaign, cause the damned tank would get me EVERY DAMN TIME, or a Italian would surrender and bust the "kill everybody" objective. But I really did like what I saw; the part where you send a guy down in the underground research facility was great; capturing a lone German and stealing his uniform so you could waltz round their base without challenge (and making moving though above underground research facility a breeze). If I hadn't lost my HD2 cds I would be trying to install it again.

I would definitely recommend H&D2 as well, it's one of the best games of its genre that I've played. I can't remember there being any bugs, but then again, I always patch my games before I even try them. Having said that, I did get stuck in the first mission of the expansion pack as I couldn't find some key...
I really liked the first H&D when it came out, but it hasn't aged very well at all in my opinion, and it's nowhere near as good as the sequel.
