I suppose I should have guessed, since I did exactly the same thing for myself a couple years ago. I also modified the light gem so that as it gets darker it also gets more transparent.

I am thinking of doing a more EP compatible version of this (more faithful health icons), which would also work in T1/G. I probably will. (Do TGA files work in T1/G?)

Good idea. Specifically, all the filenames used must be the same because otherwise it will interfere with FMs that have a custom light gem or health shields (e.g. those using new textures only without custom models).
So that kind of rules out using TGA anyway.

Just for confirmation, I already applied the light gem to my thief gold install, so yes it works.;)

Yes, TGA files work in thief gold. You need to put ObjTextures16 and MeshTextures16 in dark.cfg however.

Is it possible to make the gem bigger than it is now?
Say, the light gem becomes a mini-image of garret, which becomes more or less transparent based on his light level.
