On second thought, it might be better just to make his image darker. It's not like you become invisible, you just reflect less light.

Updated the set with a few more options. The original zip still contains the same contents, but the two new ones contain alternate versions of the health icons and light gem respectively.

I'm very impressed.
Can I assume that the same thing could be done for say, the textures and surface brushes in the game? The level of detail and finesse that you have applied to the light gem is really nice. It would be interesting to see that for the walls and floors and doors....
Of course, that would be a MAMMOTH task. I just imagine the Thief world with a face-lift, and able to still run smoothly because computers are so much faster now. That would be nice.
It would have to be done respectfully, of course - with the mood and style of the piece reflecting the original. Like you have done here.
