Speaking of games that started in the old days, what about the first Ninja Gaiden? Or the second one? Or third? NES story and cutscenes ftw!

I'll offer No One Lives Forever 1&2
From the 80's: Dizzy series (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dizzy_series#The_Yolkfolk)
was one of the first I played which had multiple recurring characters with defined personlities. Also, they're eggs!
Another oldy: Shadow of the Beast series?

I'm sure I read Donkey Kong was the first game with cutscenes
Depends on what constitutes a cutscene in that analysis I would think; I'm pretty sure that even a game like Another World had sequences that could be called cutscenes.Edit: bleh, ignore me.

Heres a quick few that spring to mind:
Doom - For popularising LAN / multiplayer gaming in the early 90s. Also kick started the mod scene through level and game editors.
Final Fantasy 7 - For bringing rpgs into the mainstream and away from the basement.
Super Mario Brothers - Not only for being one of the most popular platformers in history but for both having one of the first few catchy video game tunes that nearly anyone you met on the street could hum for you, and for being one of the key games that brought the video game industry back from the brink of total extinction from the great video game crash of the 80s.
Unreal - The first really beautiful game that had true 3D graphics.
Wingcommander 3 - Prophesy - One of the few games with extensive FMV to have an all star cast, and with good directing, and was an excellent series of games as well.
Wolfenstein - One of the first FPS games and the first (that I know of anyway) games to make the genre popular.

Reread the title.

Another World does have dialogue.
Really? Huh. There must not have been that much, then.

I only remember the computer at the beginning. "I see you drove your Ferrari."

Never played it or even saw it myself, so I'm not sure if The Journeyman Project would fit on that list.

A small amount at the beginning by the computer. I wouldn't mention it but if you're going to include a game based on it have
no dialog then even this small amount borks the idea. And thinking about it none
at all would have made quite the difference to me. That small bit eased you into it.

It's WC3 Heart of the Tiger & WC(5) Prophecy, having just seen the boxes up in the attic yesterday. I'd presume WC3 was meant as Prophecy's story is pretty weak from what I remember of it and it certainly didn't leave an impression.
WC4 (Price of Freedom) would probably be the most relevant for this thread as it is the most narratologically complex and nuanced, though wc3 was one of the first live action fmv games.
