LOL Thats hilarious. It'd be fun to see some of those designs in game. A mechanist mission, of course. :)
What I don't get is, they had nothing resembling computers back then. . .I can see how they might be able to make something like that -move-. . .but not respond in any fashion.

Historically, boilerplate was not the first robot. Don't forget the giant mechanical spider that was so objectively portrayed in "Wild, Wild West!" :D

Hehe I 've heard of both homunculi and golems.
The next Thief game should have golems(they are awesome) like other fantasy games.
