Technically speaking though. . .how would you get a robot to work like that without any sort of computer?
I mean, making machinery that moved via steam. .. sure, I can see. Not sure about walking. . .but ok, I can stretch my imagination and see that it might work. But how would it perform any sort of specific function without a computer (or a hidden midget! lol)?
I mean. . .I could even see the bots in Thief. . .because it was . . .somehow or another . . .using the human brain as its computer. possibly some sort of magic involved there. And while they were odd . . . I can see it working - within the fantasy setting.
But a real world robot? No human brain interfacing there (and aren't we glad of that!!), no computers of any sort at the time. I can't 'see' how anything would work!
And no, not being picky. Just trying to get an understandable picture here. :) Curiosity!

Well, the mechanists created Viktrolas.
Viktrolas could read disks that had holes in them, therefore reproducing a music or voice.
What if these disks with holes also were used inside the robots... The small holes/gaps having a function of coding just like the 0´s and 1´s.
These disk´s would probably be unique for each owner. For example the owner of the 'Casing the joint' robots would need a special disk with all the instructions of where to turn and where to flee (so in fact a disk with all dromed fleemarks and patrolmarks) around the mansion.
The optical eye of a robot ould also pick up a guard´s face, convert it to gap´s and fill´s and check his 'identities disk' to accept him as friend or foe. Failure means a bomb in your face.
I´m glad Karras is so good with tech. If Bill Gates was the leader of the mechanists all the robots would be killing nobles crying "All praise the WORD 98, the WORD... Malfunction! Blue screen of death - DEATH - DEATH!"

That Boilerplate thing reminds me a lot of Oscar from the game Syberia. That came out the same year as this hoax. Do you think it was the inspiration for it?
