Never had much use for the guy-the man had no real understanding of what he was attacking for all his bluster. My prayers go out for his family in their time of loss however.

As an atheist I think the sort of religion or religious people Hitchens seemed to be fighting (from the few videos I've seen here) are not all that religion is about.
I know religious people who are not hoping for death, who are not trying to convert others and who do not think that they can redirect their personal responsibility to Jesus Christ.
From the little I know this last one only applies to Catholicism, ie to Protestants not at all.
Either way, he doesn't seem to be making much of a distinction between "religion" and the vile elements some religious groups preach and live by. Again this may be due to the short clips I've seen.
Personally I don't have a problem with religious people as long as they leave me alone. And that requires a proper separation between state and religion.

Or rather makes some strange only-negative remarks on what seems to be a incompletely-condensed...you call it dogma?...of one religion. If that's brilliant then I'm probably only imagining that paying attention to the complexity of things is a both necessary and worthwhile effort.
Sorry for being indelicate, but a couple of days ago I had a look at those self complacent atheist motivationals and almost felt disgusted enough to write "Atheism – Not grasping the free-will thing for 2000 years" under each of them, but unfortunately there are far too many things which should be criticised (even from a learned atheist perspective, I'd say) than could be packed into a catchy motivational phrase.
When I read Hitchens a few years ago someone rightfully (I'd wager) pointed out that he, as a journalist and like journalists often do, only focused on the freaks and explosions.

And that's only part of the whole problem. I don't know if I've said it on TTLG before, but this new wave of atheism is IMHO largely based on those who have just enough brains to notice that dinosaurs are not in the Bible, but not enough to catch on to that the Bible isn't "wrong" because of that.... if you get my point.
