I didn't know about the Thief games when they first came out, but I was bored in 2006 one day and started searching through game demos at GameSpot. That's how I found out about the Thief games! I downloaded the demos and was hooked, but I lacked the money to purchase the full copies. :(
Fast forward to about a week and a half ago---a friend of mine received copies of Thief I and II in the mail from Amazon. He had played Thief II and Deadly Shadows (which he's been playing lately with me often watching over his shoulder), but not The Dark Project, so he's lent me Thief II whilst he plays Thief I (once we're each done, we'll swap). I'm having a blast! I'm a big fan of stealth games, but I never had the chance to play the Thief games in '98, mainly because they slipped under my radar (I was more of a console junkie back then---until 2004, our main computer still ran Windows 95!).
I also downloaded Thief 2X the other day. Despite a problematic error I've encountered, it's great! I'm having tons of fun with the other games too, though. I haven't finished the game yet, but once I do, it's off to the fan missions for me!
Basically I'm almost a total stripeling to the Thief series, as my above introduction will tell you, but it looks to be the start of a beautiful friendship! :cheeky: (It helps that I'm a sucker for steampunk.)
I love the series. It was very innovative for its time, but the fact that it's still tons of fun despite its age (even in an era with more advanced stealth-genre games existent) has me sold. :thumb:
Sorry if I sound gushy here. But before I played the Thief demos, I had never played anything like them!
I'm highly impressed with the community Thief has generated, and how long it's survived, and what it's done this long after the series' maker faded away---Thief 2X is testament to that. Worthy of the originals, yet innovative in its own right.
I look forward to future wacky antics here at the forums! :ebil:

Welcome! And "gushy" is a usual response, even for many veterans.:p

Welcome. I'd offer you some 'shroom tea but this loot sack is taking my both hands. Perhaps some other time then.

Ahh... Fresh loot!
Ah.. Er, I mean... Welcome. Even tought you don't have much real-life money, your loot pouch weights quite a bit. I'll relieve you from carrying it around. *takes the loot and runs away*

*Sighs and shakes his head theatrically*
There is truly no honor among Thieves. I'm going to leave Downwind and become a freelancer.

Honor? Is that a new kind of loot? :p

Welcome Jack! Meet us down at the Burricks Head Inn & we'll lift a pint or two (newbies have to buy the first round). You're in for a lot of fun and hours of enjoyment! Check out a few of the older pubs in the area also; thiefmissions.com, Thief the Circle, The Keep of Metal & Gold, Morrgan's Dark Projects, to name a few. You'll find hundreds of fan missions that are worth their weight in gold (as are their authors & beta testers, & all contributors, mind you). Make sure you stash your loot well before you join us! (Too late: looks like NeKoeNMa already lightened your load a tad!) ;)
Welcome and have fun! :cheeky:
