Holy Cows! I'd forgotten... - by jay

...how erie, suspenseful and FUN playing Thief FMs is!!
Due to a bad t2 disc and being drawn into some other games, I haven't played Thief at all for about a year or so (since not long after T2X). Recently I got new discs and downloaded some of the newer FMs and was immediately sucked back into it. I didn't remeber how truly immersive these games are, and how talented and generous the FM builders are. I just wanted to give a thanks to those who keep churning out these great missions and say how good it is to delve into the Thief world once again.

Must be something in the water Jay. I've been doing the same thing myself. FM's have gotten all around better and better. Welcome back.

I feel that way almost every time I open a new mission (except the crap missions) but I guess in a crap mission contest I should feel depressed when I play one. I use a No CD crack so I dont risk damageing my retail thief games.
Now back to regular missions. Even after playing a far superior game graphics and physics wise it still amazes me how atmospheric and alluring fan missions are to me. I forget all about graphics and physics and just play away.
Thankyou big time to all mission makers and object/texture makers. The makers of Garrett Loader and Darkloader. And of course the people who host the missions and this forum. And even all you other taffers who inspire all the aforementioned
to keep doing what they do.
It will be a sad day when its all over. I feel operating systems of the future as well as advanced hardware will in time just refuse to run our beloved Thief games. Hopefully there will be a Thief four or something to take its place.
Maybe the Dark mod will kick butt. I hope so. As it seems T3 Ed has flopped
even after a year of letters and a huge patition brought it to us almost 2 years ago. Why didnt Eidos just use the HL2 engine or the Splinter Cell Engine insted of that Unreal Hybrid thing that is so hard to work with from what I hear ? I really wasn't all that impressed with it anyhow. I have seen T2 missions that come pretty darn close to T3 Ed. And it is pretty limited like Drom Ed, maybe even more so. Is T3 Ed even capable of makeing huge sprawling missions like Drom Ed ?
Bla Blargh !! Im rambeling.
Thanks Again to Everyone !

If there ever is a time when new pc's won't run Thief, I'll make sure to keep one of today's pc's just for Thief playing.

That time is, unfortunately, now. At least my machine with 8800GTX cards is pretty much useless for Thief. The drivers are crappy enough that future updates might fix it, but I think we can all assume that fixing problems with Thief is not going to be high on the manufacturers' lists.
Doubly painful is the fact that my old PC won't even drive the monitor on my new one, so I'd have to keep an entirely separate setup to run Thief again.

I have even toyed with the idea, of hell buying parts to keep my older system going! Waiting too long, eventually, someday, parts are harder to find. Sounds crazy, I know, but, is it really.:erg:
It dawned on me Christmas day, still playing Thief, just like I did back in 1999. Received Thief as a Christmas gift, the gift that keeps on giving. Man how time flies, here I am again, having a ball. :)

I had a little bit of a disappointment recently with Thief's second demo. I decided that it had been along time since I played a Thief 1 game so I downloaded it and then much to my shagrin when I tried to install it into my portion of XP on this machine it said it couldn't because it seemed to have detected the NT coding that appears to be also somewhere in XP? However, I do have one alternative to try yet...I also have Win98se installed on the other portion of this computer...hopefully I will be able to do it there instead? I don't know if anything else will crop up due to monitor, vid card or whatever since those are upgraded componets. I think it should be OK since I have TG installed on another computer that I have with Win98se but other componets are somewhat older now too (that's the one still in the shop after all this time due to difficulty in getting it to run properly, etc.). So wish me luck :)

It's a real shame that one of the best, if not
the best, videocards available today won't run Thief. And basically due to driver issues that they may never fix.
Do older drivers not work with the GTX due to its brand new architecture?

Hooray...it worked in my Win98se OS :) My vid card is a Sapphire/ATI X800GTO and Monitor is a Sony E440 Trinitron I got a few years ago. No problems at all with the exception that I wasn't able to figure out why my mouse wheel wouldn't setup the way I like for item selections. I know the reason for a Logitec I used to have to make it function for this but not sure why the Microsoft I have now won't or how to fix it. Works fine for T2 though  Oh well no biggie, just glad I was able to play it. Maybe I'll try to reload TG in this one too someday soon ;)
