Holy Cows! I'd forgotten... - by jay

He's talking about the T2 demo. I seem to remember having that problem with it myself and the -lgntforce switch didn't seem to work. I was only looking at it out of curiosity to I don't think I did much else with it.

The Nvidia driver v84.21 runs all Thief versions with 8xAA and 8xAF (not 4x) on my 7800GTX-SLI-rig without problems.
Any driver newer that that and it's "Bye bye Thief 1" (Thief 2 runs).
I am running Thief 1 (Gold) successfully with Nvidia driver 93.71 using a 6800 GT card. I think the secret is to use a modified EXE that is designed to solve the safe texture manager problem for T1. The fix to file user.cfg does not apply to T1. This link:
(
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=75031#texturememory)
contains details of the modified EXE's.
That said, I think Epithumia is right about the 8800 and its drivers. This is discussed further in this thread:

Ok, I KNOW i'm going to catch hell for this one, but....
"What did the Hammerite eating the sanctified hamburger say to the vampire?"
"Holy Cows, Batman!"
And then he was drained of all his blood, killing him AND the vampire since he was blessed by a holy hamburger. :cheeky:

I already use the modified EXEs. However, this doesn't solve the problem for me.
On a sidenote to no one in particular:
A popular misconception about the Nvidia drivers seems to be that because the same driver is used, people with different graphics cards (or to be more precise: different graphics chips) should get the same result.
This is not true.
Those drivers are called "unified" because they combine driver routines for *most* members of the Geforce chip family.
Because of the different hardware designs of the chips different speed optimization strategies are used. The result is that the driver routines differ and sometimes have different results on screen. Maybe only some polygons or textures are rendered differently, maybe a game does not work in the chosen resolution...
Please have a look at the driver history in the release notes if you don't believe this (pdf-file at the bottom of the download page). You will be surprised how many different "glitches" are listed...

And yes, I tried any patches and configuration modifications under the sun (SLI enabled or not).
Did you try to run the game in "software mode" (Hardware Video acceleration turned off
in the Thief I Options menu)? It would really surprise me if that didn't solve the problem. And I'd like to know the answer because even I sometimes fear I might be running out of older computers one day.

Software rendering "works" for T1 (you can easily try it), but not for T2 which has only hardware acceleration. Even so, the texture quality is so bad in software mode that it just isn't worth it. Better to just use an older computer with a decent, pre 84.xx, graphics card. Save your parts. I will probably try an ATI card as my next upgrade since Nvidia seems to have let us down. So then I'll have one computer (Nvidia) for fog and another computer (ATI) for decent dark textures.:tsktsk: With that and a KVM switch, I should be set.:)

Hallo baeuchlein! ;-)
No, actually I didn't try that - this is "too" retro for me.
You see, from the "dawn of time" I played the Thief games with 3D acceleration.
If there are other suggestions in this thread that are new to me I will try them - and confirm out of your (and now mine) curiosity, that the software mode works. Which I expect, too.

Since this has strayed completely from FM-related discussion, I'm moving it to a more appropriate forum.

I once had no 3D capable card for a week and simply
had to play it in software mode. Apparently, I'm a Thief addict since then.
