Hong Kong??? It looks different ...... - by HKPrince

Wan Chai does have several markets, one with stalls on the street, very typical Hong Kong market. You can see fish stalls, meat stalls, vegetable stalls, etc. The other ones are in the new multi-storey buildings. The big one is in an old building on Queen's Road East and it should be the so called Wan Chai market, but it has been closed now, I don't know whether it will be knocked down or renovated for other use. Several blocks away from the market there is really a temple between the tall building, very strange and funny, isn't it? I like the monk in the game saying 'um goi jie guo', in cantonese means excuse me or give way please. I will tell you more about how the places in DX are like in real Hong Kong later, may be with some photos if I find proper ones.

Have you played the first level?
Sorry.
All (well most) of the levels in Deus Ex are based off of real worl locations, and modeled as such.

It's an action game, not a city simulation. I found all the Deus Ex maps fun and well designed.

I'd love to see photos of the areas depicted in the game in Hong Kong.
Grundbegriff shot some really nice photos of Liberty island which he posted here on the forums, and which are preserved at (

I had also tried to get Many's Song to take some pictures in Paris for us, but so far after many months, I guess it slipped his mind.
If you get some photos from Hong Kong, I hope you'll allow me to post them here and at deusex-machina.com

Do a search for "Wan Chai." Here's one:

The devs did a pretty good job reproducing the essence of several real-life locations, most notably Liberty Island. But the requirement of keeping poly counts low and avoiding really huge open areas limited how far they could go. Maybe with the Unreal 2 engine they'll carry on the tradition and do an even better job being true-to-life (since they know that's one of the things we enjoyed about Deus Ex).

I'm off to Paris this June with College. Kinda cool, they had a bunch of free spaces on the History dep's trip, so they allowed Philosophy students to go too. So while the History geeks drag themselves round museums and old castles, those of a more Philosophical bent (my self inclused

If y'all want, I'll try and grab some pictures of... er... which bit of the city is it in the game?
