You could kill the golden child, but only with the bow upgrade.

True, but a kid dies, and that's second best.
I mean, some of the best games have kids that you can kill in 'em:
Deus Ex
Fallout 2

Can you kill kids in Fallout 3? I don't recall because I never played that thing again after the first time.

So what would piss of the TTLG crowd more - a fourth part to the Garrett story that doesn't stay true to the original trilogy as far as gameplay/atmosphere goes or (what I'd prefer) an entirely new trilogy set in a different era/universe/whatever with similar but "modernized" gameplay mechanics?

The first scenario would piss me off. The second scenario is reasonable. There are certain things that, if they are going to change them, they may as well start over and divorce T4 from the trilogy. It lets them take the easy and least imaginative and original route, than making a T4 that dovetails nicely with the existing trilogy.

My thoughts exactly.

So how do taffers feel about a Thief game that takes place in the traditional steampunk Thief universe, using The City/Hammerites/Keepers/Pagans/Ramirez/Bafford/The Old Quarter, etc etc etc, but didn't directly involve Garrett? Say for instance the player played as a anonymous Thief, someone who starts low in the ranks and needs to work their way up?
Strangely enough, I think I'd be OK with that, mainly because it feels like Garrett's story is done. I think I'd actually prefer that scenario to a complete reboot using Garrett as the main character.

Depending on how it is done, I may prefer it. Garrett's story is over, and he has come full circle at the end of TDS. What more could he do? Thwart the plans of another godlike antagonist? (Well, okay, I'd still like to see FMs with him.)
It would be cool to see a Thief game focused on crime... thieves guilds, double-crossing, wardens, fences, beggars... some supernatural stuff, some Hammer missions... but with most missions having themes like the first half of TDP.

Actually that's what I'm hoping for since the game was announced. I think Garrett's story is over, and any continuation with him at this point would be just forced. I love the environment though, so a new character in the same setting would work for me.
Also, this:

I'm pretty sure that it has been officially said that Garrett will be the protagonist of Thief 4.
With that said, I would much prefer if he wasn't. As others have said, his story is over. On top of that, it would be nice to have a character whose motivation was a big deeper than either A) Greed or B) Self-preservation. Only in Thief:DS did he start to take an interest in something that wasn't directly his concern.
