Sorry, this board is kind of old, but playing DX has given me hope. I just hope the T4 team is like this one.
There are a lot of things it keeps from the original DX game, including the ability to choose your own style. The game also gives you a small reward for ghosting a mission.
The other thing I'm liking about EM is that they're paying attention to the fans. The orange glow and HUD waypoint markers can be turned on or off on any difficulty, and they added an FoV slider in the gameplay options.
Though it would be cool to have some of the stuff they've added in patches be in the game upon release, a patch is better than nothing.

Well, yes and no. I hope that the Thief team has taken care to go over the 2 original games in the same way the DXHR team obviously have with DX.
I don't mind if the team isn't "like" the DXHR team, just that they pay attention to what made the originals so damn good.
Now, now I'm hopeful.

Im afraid I must agree with SE. I too am hopeful for something not terrible.

Deus Ex HR's 'Tomb Raider' Engine is looking pretty creaky !
If it looks this 'ugly' (especially the character models, and character animations) in 2011 (and some of you with low spec PC's will disagree and think it looks beautiful !) then imagine how ugly it will look in 2 years when T4 is ready.

T4 is a different team, different art director and all, and a different engine. We won't think it looks beautiful or ugly. We simply don't care unless it muddles the gameplay. What Thief offers isn't in the looks, but feel.

Thief 4 won't be using the same engine as DX:HR. It hasn't been announced which engine yet, but chances are good it'll probably use some iteration of UE3.
Also, what JTR said. Thief 1 and 2 were considered well behind the curve graphically when they came out, yet they were far from what I'd consider "ugly". Good art can do more for a games atmosphere than good graphics ever could. Even if T4 were to use the same long-in-the-tooth by today's standards Underworld engine, it's still more than enough provided EM has at least a fairly competent art director.

It's Unreal 3-based, though it hasn't been stated overtly, strong knowledge and experience building previous titles in Unreal 3 was one of the primary qualifications in the job descriptions for the T4 team expected of applicants. T4's Art Director will hopefully not subscribe to JJB's base choices and adapt them to Thief.

I usually recognize UE by blocky, low detailed architecture, low-res textures (somehow they often have low-res textures, don't know why), and some undescribable special look and feel (which I don't like).
TDS, Bioshock, Gears of War .... they all look kind of similar to me.

True, but for me it was the sound that really did the most for the atmosphere in TDP and TMA. I have high expectations here. Anything less impressive than the sound that was produced 13 years ago will be a disappointment for me.
