Isn't Scratches in the same kind of style as Serena? (The ending of Scratches was awful, so if you were ever to get stuck near the end, then it's no big deal.)
Quick! Before demagogue shows up, here's some interactive fiction: (

Silent Hill 2 on PC is plagued with problems (part of being a Japanese game ported to PC in the early 2000s) so I wouldn't bother with that version. Emulate it instead.
And no, don't bother with the HD remake either. That's even worse.

point me toward a decent emulator?

The only one you'll ever need is pcsx2, just be ready for a lot of setup. PM Renzatic -- he can tell you more.

If you don't mind delving into gamecube emulation give "Eternal Darkness" a go. That game really fucks with your head. Psycho Mantis style.

Condemned 1, FEAR 1, Penumbra. Amnesia:TDD is ok if the sanity effect doesn't annoy you, which is the primary reason I'll never play it again. Undying, which I think is on GOG now, hasn't held up well and isn't especially scary but it's basically a horror game and has some environments that were stunning at the time it came out.
Deadly Premonition seems to work ok (or at least, as "ok" as the console version was) with the DPFix patch and a gamepad.

FEAR 1 has come up a couple of times, was looking at that on steam actually. Looks a bit like Counter Strike though?
Played Undying, quite enjoyed that.

FEAR 1 is a tactical shooter, although IMHO it's the best scripted/singleplayer tactical shooter ever made (I include "scripted" there to exclude the likes of SWAT 4 or ArmA). No, really, while the AI has flaws like in all games the way they integrated them into the environments is total genius and the gunplay pretty much destroys every other story-shooter. The horror bits aren't really all that scary, although at times they're quite creepy at least, but the overall story of the first game is pretty well done and quite disturbing when you piece it together.
Edit: Actually the most noteworthy thing about the AI are the barks. No, really, the way the people you're fighting for most of the game communicate with each other is fairly amazing. Only other games I can think of with similarly great AI chatter would be the Brothers In Arms series (or LGS stuff of course).

What's the name of that one on the big icy boat with all of the flashbacks?
