I seem to remember that being pretty good.
Anyway, description above.

Cryostasis was great but it still requires some theoretical computer from the future to run it well. Or that config thing someone posted on the 1C Forum that almost entirely disables the physics-based particle effects.

I ran Cryostasis fine with a 470 GTX. The combat is a little clunky but the story is interesting and it does have some unique ideas. I think it's not just a good horror game, but also good on its artistic merits as well.

If you don't mind delving into gamecube emulation give "Eternal Darkness" a go. That game really fucks with your head. Psycho Mantis style.
I'm going to have to say absolutely not -- it's a very boring, repetitive game with cookie-cutter combat, a game that isn't scary or atmospheric at all, which means it fails as a survival horror. Its sole gimmick is the sanity effects, and unless you completely suck at the game you won't see most of those sanity effects -- and on top of that the game doesn't even really punish you for completely losing your sanity, because anything weird that happens all goes back to normal after a minute or two and in comes the large ham VA: "THIS ISN'T HAPPENING!" When you realize that, what little amount of scariness or strangeness the effects had is gone because once your sanity meter gets low you see it coming and you know that anything strange that happens is just another cheapass sanity effect that sometimes impedes your progress for no good reason.
And that's not even touching the Lovecraft knockoff issue.

Fair enough. I've never played the game myself. Was going completely by gameplay videos, and really liked what I saw in those.

This probably isn't what you're looking for, but Anchorhead, the best interactive fiction there is, happens to also be an awesome horror story.

I'd recommend Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth if you're able to deal with the sanity effects. It's flawed, but pretty damn good in terms of a pervasive sense of dread and ratcheting up tension, regardless of what some spergdoodle's going to say about the truck scene after this post.
Silent Hill 2 is pretty much mandatory if you're into horror games. SH1, too, if you're able to get past the graphics.
Dead Space 1 is pretty good for survival horror, but do try and play it with a 5.1 set, because that's what really shows off the sound field.
If you haven't played FEAR, Piglick, you should. It's pretty much an amazing shooter with some caveats: the environments are repetitive and the horror's not very horror-y. But it's got atmosphere, an intriguing story, and some of the best first person combat ever committed to a game.

Contrary to Mr. Naysayer, I had fun with Eternal Darkness, but it may not be everyone's cup of tea. :)

DCotE is an okay game. It just ends at the truck scene.
PigLick on 26/2/2014 at 09:45
DCotE? oh right nevermind the cthulu game.
I actually own the original gamecube disc for Eternal Darkness, played it when it was first released, found it a bit meh, so gotta agree with dethtoll on that one
***HEAD EXPLODES****
also, played some of Anchorhead, is a pretty decent piece of text adventure.
