I do a podcast for Civ over at (
http://polycast.apolyton.net/index.php) another site, and we've had the chance to ask a few different folks @ Firaxis about it, and the universal answer is : "We'd love to, but EA actually still owns the rights.... :( "
Frakkin' EA

Can somebody explain to me why EA of all companies manages to own every other critically great game that they'll probably never follow up on?
I get the whole "if you're not growing, you're shrinking" idea and how that might make a company aquisition-hungry, but is that what accounts for all these games? Just incidental properties from gobbling up everything it can? Or did somebody somewhere think EA might actually find these properties valuable someday?
Also, re: Tea Party ... would have been cooler if you picked an Austin Tea Party.
Sounds better, capital of a break-away colony, and all around awesome city.

It's in Texas, how great can it be?

Austin isn't like the rest of Texas, to say the least. It's the hole in the bible belt.
Don't forget that Richard Garriott and Spector and the whole Origin-inspired line of gaming was first coming out of Austin. It's got a spirit to it. And it still has Arkane, Bioware, Junction Point, etc., there now.

Bioware in Austin? Only their B-team, the real Bioware is still in Canada.
Anyway, back to Alpha Centauri. I remember reading that Take2/2K Games had tried to buy the property, but EA said no. I believe that a 2K employee said this on the X-com 2 Steam forum.

I'm using those names for my settlements, absolutely.
Very glad they seem to have stuck pretty closely to the original formula - definitely buying this one now.

I loved the original Colonization, but this one is 3D. I don't think I could get over idiocy of that(I couldn't in Civ IV for sure).

Given that I 'got over' the 'idiocy' of Civilization's 3D about two revisions ago, I think I'll adapt very quickly.
