Just look at a game like Gears of War 2. In order to slow down the gameplay they slowed player movement, ESPECIALLY the ability to sprint/roadie run. I don't really think it works tremendously well in a shooter, but IMO restrictions like that would translate very well to a game like Thief.
I think the key would be in designing good game modes. Maybe even a game like markers or assasination could work well (I mean the games that you might've played IRL at a new job or at school). I.E., all players appear to be guards, but one player is secretly a thief. They have to go walk around and knock out enemies without alerting the others (logistics would def. have to be worked out though, so everyone can't just stand in a circle staring at each other). Or the ol' game where everyone has a target, when you kill the target you then get their target and each player is a unique character model, etc.

I definitely throw my vote behind a co-op mode where two thieves could be working on completing different objectives (or tag-teaming an objective) during the same mission - even seeing who can complete the most objectives competition style would be fun - but I'd probably never even use a multiplayer thief function that wasn't simple co-op play.
Like it was mentioned before - why have 16 people hiding instead of 1? :laff:

I think a co-op mode would be pretty awesome, but it should be a last priority, I'd rather see an A+ single player and no multiplayer than C- single player and multiplayer. I think releasing a patch after the initial release would be the way to go.

There have been some amazing stealth based multiplayer games in recent years, primary that comes to mind being Splinter Cell's Spy vs. Mercenaries gametype. Not to mention ThieveryUT is a prime example. It can be done, but like the single player I wouldn't want it to be under developed. Put some effort into its development if you want to impliment it, EM.

As many have said. Either go for it fully and make it an integral, enjoyable part of the game or LEAVE IT OUT COMPLETELY. I'd prefer it left out, so the team can concentrate on more important things.
Getting what is essentially one of the most "private" player experiences to play nicely in multiplayer must be a nightmare.

Leave Multiplayer for the modders. That way we'd have more control and get it right anyway, and it wouldn't detract from the real game's development.

Unfortunately for the few that want it, the code would have to be built in to make it possible, or a way made for modders to patch something in.

Then forget it.

That's my general thinking, but I don't know how quickly they can build the foundation for it.

Only "type" of multiplayer I could imagine working in Thief would be co-op.
