I doubt a sneaker is really suited to multiplayer. Realistically the guards dont know if and when a thief is coming. But with a multiplayergame they would know and employ tactics like running through the level swinging their swords at every dark corner. Maybe if they only added a thief to 1 match per 30 or so it would be more realistic. There is a difference between standing watch and defending a place from a siege. The first is boring, and who would want to play a boring game.

As I have said many times, cooperative multiplayer could be great for a game like Thief. Not many players, 4 max. Single missions, not the whole campaign. Deathmatch or Team Deathmatch has not sense for me in a Thief game.
Cooperative.

Ok folks,
it's pretty clear that Thief 4 now finally could use a multiplayer part - as some in the community always wished. Since Eidos Montreal could be looking into this, let's provide some material here:
Playable MP Modes: Wouldn't do too much here, the calssics like Capture the Flag (maybe rename to Capture the Loot), Deathmatch and Team-Deathmatch have to make it into the final version - no doubt.
Right away you could also add a little coop mode guard vs thieves -draw inspiration from Splinter Cell MP for that one.
And Guns: We definitely need unlockables like COD Modern Warfare provided. I want a muskeets, swords, daggers, shurikens.... I also suggest oil flasks - they are just plain fun!
Hand in hand with selectable classes come load-outs.
rpg elements like introduced by Dark Messiah would come in handy too for this MP stuff.
To round stuff up, could we please insert magic and spell attacks?

That's it from my side for the beginning, feel free to show appreciation for a Mp mode in T4, also feel free to provide us with your ideas!

Why does it "pretty clearly" need multiplayer? For me, the whole original idea of Thief is playing solo.
Not against it, it's not like I would HAVE to play multiplayer if it's there, just commenting.
Edit. Ok, reacted to the first sentence of that post, now I read the rest of it - bad, bad troll ;)

Deathmatch? Guns? Spells?
The crew will have your hide.

my opinion on multiplayer: NO
i want them to focus on the story first. and then again on the story and then again on the story some more. if they still find new twists after their 100th playthrough then they can think about MP and even then they will have to do something exceptional if you wanna have any lasting appeal for it.
since quake is for free now you can forget deatmatch and capture the flag to have any lasting appeal. it will have to be thief-specific and tailored gameplay. a unique experience, not just a conversion of an existing mode just with the thief textures and models. And THAT requires a FULL development team imo. You could divide the teams once the core technologies and art assesst have been created, but the initial workload would be double for the core team.......
no, please do not. once you are comfortable with the new Thief game you created you shall go out and deliver MP later, or just coop (which I would like much more).
