I'd never play Thief with a friend. The experience is meant to be alone, co-op would ruin the mood.
MP
could be cool in games like Morrowind, but linear games like Thief? C'maan!
As the saying goes, "don't knock it till you try it."

Thief the Dark Project was the first
non-linear game I played. I know it looks linear, but one must explore in order to understand how many options there are in a single mission. Yeah, it hasn't got the wide spaces of Morrowind, but the Thief idea has serious potential in this matter. Besides the Thievery mod has a good start on the matter of multiplay thieving.
For me personally it is this exact
alone experience that I want to share with my friends. I don't like massive RPGs (with the exception of Morrowind - I play that) because it takes up so much time to play the game. I would definitely like the option of a few hours co-op strategical infiltration of a mansion, prison, tomb what ever, with another good friend, who can help by distracting guards or sharing equipment.

I'd rather they focus all energy on single player.

Do you remember a game called System Shock 2?.
I didn't see the mood were ruined. I enjoyed alone and with some friends in MP. Anyway, play in MP is not mandatory, you can choose :D

Thief definitely is a single player game, but they could give at least some form of co-op extension the the SP. Maybe that would be cleared in the beta testing phase.

Here alot of people (me too) says that, nowadays, multyplayer is obligatory for a modern game.
And think to the achievement gained by the Thief 2 multiplayer expansion.

This is going to be an unpopular view around here, but screw it:
I believe you haven't yet fully experienced stealth gameplay until you've put your wits against a living breathing human being. That's right. Multiplayer. The competitive versus variety. And I don't want to hear about Thief 4 borrowing a thieves versus guards game type from Splinter Cell. Thievery did it first, and better.
Don't get me wrong. I am all about a solid single player experience, and I think the ability for the community to pick it up in FMs is extremely important as well. But I stand adamantly opposed to this idea that Thief and multiplayer don't mix.
It's been said here that Thievery was not stealthy. I declare shenanigans on that. No single player Thief experience comes close to the intense satisfaction that I have felt from ghosting past bands of very intelligent, skillful, and thorough human players. It's one thing to have AI walking in the same redundant patrol paths as you leave. It's another thing entirely when four or five thinking people are left wondering "WTF?!?" as they suddenly discover that loot they were camping has mysteriously gone missing.
The majority of you have judged the experience with out taking the time to really get comfortable with it. Yes, multiplayer Thief is big bad and scary and no, you can't just hide in the same shadow for twenty minutes and time everyone's redundant patrol patterns...
You have to think, and I mean really *think*. No singleplayer gaming experience has ever come close to touching Thievery in that regard, and if Thief 4 has a chance of bringing that back anew... then I'm all for it.

The main argument against MP seems to be that the dev team would lose time on SP, most likely they would have a seperate team for the multiplayer and they are unlikely to be looking for a christmas release so I'm sure they could just add an extra month if the MP isn't ready, I know I wouldn't mind.
Anyway, Co-op isn't necessary, but it would very much be welcome, it's such good fun in SC and I'm sure it wouldn't be that difficult to implement if planned right.
To FS, there are some rather cynical old b4**4rds here(will I get away with that), thief has an amazing universe full of mystery and variety, but some people ask for a game which is exactly like the previous ones, but Thief is about themes, and a game which is identical just won't work. Really, they don't want a new game, they were probably angry when they saw robots in TMA.
While I can see why they are resistant to your thoughts, I have thought similiar things, imagine being a Pagan attacking a cathedral, a Mechanist invading Kurshok caves. Modes with stealth can still have lots of NPCs. I would trust them to be inventive and think of fun new game modes.
I liked SCs MP, I never could get TUT, too difficult to learn all the maps and plan for it. T4 would have to be easier to get into...

Man, you wrote what I was gonna write.
Hey, naysayers. How much co-op have you played? Would you be interested in playing something sneaky in co-op at all? Because I'm sure there are many here who wouldn't mind teaming up with you for T2 co-op or SS2.

Tenchu:Wrath of Heaven had co-op, and the Xbox version had online co-op. It was cool to do team-up stealth kills.

What I wonder about is, how could you possibly add to the game with a multiplayer mode?
Thief is by nature a single player game. Thieves are loners. I can barely get my mind around a co-op mode, nevermind a mode for more than two players. I think one thing the gaming world has to learn is that not everything needs to have a multiplayer component. Who's gonna play all that anyway? Make dedicated SP games and dedicated MP games, and otherwise do it where it makes sense. If I take a game like COD4 or GoW, these games sport incredibly well-penned stories, great atmosphere and voice work, and it's all wasted on people who just want to gang up on each other. Rather make the best SP Thief you can make, and leave the deathmatch to games where it makes sense.
