Lytha, wasn't a fourth reason mentioned somewhere in a conversation or a scroll? I seem to recall something about a person's severe guilt keeping him from having a "restful" death. Perhaps if he committed a really heinous crime or harbored some kind of secret guilt throughout his life, he would become a zombie soon after his death? Then again, that might have been in a different game.

People might hate me for this but my theory about the Old Quarters was that the keepers caused the cataclizm so that no one would desturb The Eye. I'm probaly foolsie to think that but it would be cool that the keepers also make undead.
Well...along those lines I also think that the Keeper Enforcers' quick action fireball-shooting doohickies would have been able to deal with the zombies. So the fact that they _didn't_ deal with the zombies is rather interesting. Then again, it may be the typical we-can't-reveal-our-presence rationale, with the enforcers being sent out by Orland in violation of those principles.

Because LGS put them there?

Or maybe Gamall produced the cataclysm to help protect the Eye until she was ready for it. With glyphs, she could animate statues, so why not corpses? She was certainly ruthless enough to destroy a section of the city to serve her ends. Or maybe the cataclysm was just side effect of her attempts to acquire the Eye. On the other hand, it could be that the cataclysm was a side effect of the glyph magic the Keepers used to seal the cathedral. There seems to be at least some glyph association with Zombies if we consider the effect of the Compendium of Reproach on the Abysmal Gale's crew.

Such a variety of unique theories on how the Thief Universe's zombies originated. Intriguing. Some of you have, seemingly, been cotemplating on this particular subject before.

This forum has existed for six years, nearly everything has been debated by now.

Apparently, this quote from TDP seems to be about the Eye:
The ancient corruption was again contained. To do more would have upset the balance, but we knew to remain ever vigilant lest it resurface. Neither the Hammers nor the pagans could be trusted not to meddle. -- Keeper Annals
...which would indicate that:
1. The Keepers did not take out the undead freely roaming Old Quarter immediately after the Cathedral was sealed for fear that they might be discovered.
2. The Eye was the source of the corruptive influence which caused the undead to rise there in the first place.

Hmm, it's possible that the cataclysm was caused by the Eye trying to protect itself from Gamall. If the eye knew about her it would have known she'd probably try to destroy it since no eye = no final glyph. She might have been deadly to humans but would her powers protect her from a small army of hammer haunts?
The evidence doesn't point to the Keepers though, one of the documents in the hidden Keeper base says they approve of one of their order using the elemental seals to stop the undead from spreading.

Don't bring Thief: Deadly Shadows into this.

Interesting.......
I've been wondering about the Old Quater in TDS. Is it the same one in TDP? I recall it being destroyed by the cataclysm. Perhaps there is more than one section.........
