Anyone have any clue why exactly Garret lost his eye and has a mech one, and then why does that 'eye' sentienel talk to him later on in TDS?

I'm going to assume that you haven't played the original Thief: the Dark Project yet, have you?
If not, I highly reccomend playing it to find out. If you have, but still don't know, then you must have missed all of the cutscenes and introduction videos.
If you're really impatient, here's how he lost it:
Garret loses his eye as a "reward" for completing a particular job for an employer. He finds out that not everyone is who they say they are.
Good lord man, you're missing out on probably the best cutscene of all time.

It hurts just watching that scene!

Impatience is not a defining factor!!!
Jolyn, destroy that spoiler if you really want to help him/her!
I'm saying this because I care, mind you.

Oh god yes, get rid of the spoiler. And RedemptionsScar, play the first game, trust us, you won't be dissapointed. I started with TDS myself, and it's what brought me here, but TDP (1st game) is what really clinched me and kept me coming back a year later. The graphics might be the tiniest bit dated at this point, but the game is one of the best I have ever played. Also the vast majority of FMs at this point are for TMA (2nd game), so it is really worth grabbing even if you don't like it as much. Some of the FMs that have been made for it are stunningly amazing.

Calmly, metal dawn. Take slow breaths. And I'm not Jolyn, I'm Jolyn's bass!
First of all, my spoiler is properly tagged, and it's not like that info is not also available in other places on the forum. Some people don't want to spend both money and many hours of gameplaying to find out the answer to a simple question, so I gave it here.
That being said, perhaps I did reveal a bit much, so I'll modify it to be more of a teaser to play the first game. (Though, he's probably already seen the answer I gave originally...)

RedemptionsScar, "how did Garrett lose his eye?" is the exact reason I came to TTLG. My first experience with Thief was Metal Age, when Thief 3 was just a dream waiting to materialize. After playing the free game of TMA that came with a friend's soundcard, I knew there was more that I had to know. I went online and searched for all things Thief...and found TTLG. Here I found out what I needed to know about obtaining a copy of Dark Project (still looking for a copy of Gold that doesn't require the use of a credit card), but still didn't know how Garrett lost his eye.
When I finally nabbed a copy of TDP, I was sorely tempted to just watch the movies. Eventually, I watched that cutscene unfold with my jaw hanging open. It IS the greatest.
