Was just musing to myself as I've become so used to firing up the TTLG forums, that I do it without thought. Gmail, Facebook, TTLG are my default tabs. So I was trying to remember how I first came to be on TTLG.
Nothing too exciting - I was a little bit obsessed with Deus Ex and literally just googled (or probably altavista or whatever was
de rigeur in 2002) somewhere that people were talking about it. Thus ensued some cringe-worthy game debate, the sort you have when you're in your early 20s.
I even found my first (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45577&p=519227&viewfull=1#post519227) comment, which is probably completely wrong.
Also the first (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=66186) thread I ever started.
Got this doing advanced search for any posts by username faetal a year ago or older sorted by date in ascending order.
Anyway, this post isn't terribly interesting, but my hope is that other people's might be.
Anyone? How did you get here?

I found TTLG in about 2004 or 2005. Originally I came to the CoSaS site when looking for Thief FMs and probably found a link somewhere over there. I lurked the forums since then, but never really felt like joining… still I found the forum very good (though lots of interesting posters disappeared over the years unfortunately) and checked it pretty much daily.
Then a couple weeks ago I was sitting in my office and saw a gen gaming thread that descended into quite amusing shit storm, so on an impulse I decided to register and make a little drive-by post just to have a little fun. The post got subsequently deleted along with several others, so I started my TTLG career by having my first post removed and receiving a warning from a mod… :nono:

I found TTLG through a search engine during my first time playing TDP. It must have been early 1999. I had jumped the gap where you're supposed to extend the bridge in The Lost City, couldn't get back across or get out some other way, and was trying to find out what I was missing. Lurked for a long time after that. I think I finally registered here to ask something about Thievery.
Edit- Just checked my posting history. Yep, my first post was a boring question about Thievery: (

My second post was more fun: (

I have no recollection of how I got here. My first post was an argument that AVP being a bad movie was unsurprising, and it would have been more surprising if it had turned out good. Seems... Random. I never even saw that movie.

I'm here because of Tomb Raider, believe it or not.
I was a huge fan, and I had all the little catalogues with the Eidos games in them, which lead me to deus ex and thief.
Also I had played System Shock quite a bit back in '96 or so, and discovered the ss2 demo, which also led me here. I lurked for about 5 years before registering and making my first post. I haven't found it, but I'm pretty sure I bitched at ZyloneBane for telling somebody he hoped they would eat shit and die. or something along those lines. I think I said something along the lines that people think they're so important but TTLG was basically dead, because the front page hadn't been updated in like 4 years. ... eeeeeyah...
Of course he was justified because the person was asking about where to pirate SS2 so.... newb mistake. haha.

I came here because of Thief, but the exact details have long since been lost. Probably because I got stuck in some missions. For a long time, I was one of the few members who were active in both the Thief forums and in Commchat (using the word "active" generously here, since I've always been mostly a lurker). Mostly Thief Fan Missions and The Editors' Guild. I haven't played much Thief for a long time now though, as I usually get my gaming fix from TF2 these days.

I first discovered this place because of Thief. I started posting because of System Shock 2.
I'm not ashamed to admit that I torrented those games -- back then, there really was no other way to get them. I didn't have the money -- SS2 ran for $80 or more.
Basically a webcomic that I read had a review in the author's rant space of Thief 3; he was apparently a fan of the series and enjoyed most aspects of the new game. The way he described things had me saying "that sounds COOL!" I had seen Thief on the shelves when they were new, but always kind of dismissed them. Not one to simply start with the latest entry, I went to Suprnova -- remember that place? -- and got myself a working copy of Thief Gold, and having trouble getting it started (the classic freeze bug) led me to google the problem and I found this place.
Couple months later I realized the same fix could apply to System Shock 2 as they were the same engine. Someone ripped their copy of SS2 for me based on a request of a friend of mine and uploaded it. I had a blast with the game, but the segment where SHODAN reveals herself was mystifying to me because without subtitles I couldn't follow her at all. Still kind of amused/annoyed that when I posted a thread asking for a transcript someone was like "you missed all that? Oh dear." (Oh dear yourself you handsniffer)
I still have my ISOs of Thief 1 and 2 and SS2. Just in case, y'know?
I mostly sort of lurked and posted sporadically in Thiefgen and Shockgen until about 2006-2007 when I started posting regularly and got into fights with everyone :D

After playing Thief: DS, I was trying to get Thief II to work on my computer, and stumbled across this place out of desperation. And by "place" I mean horrifying cult where you all took turns shaving my head, feeding me bananas, and brutally raping me while I had to wear black mascara and cry: 'Thank you, mommy. I'm sorry I blocked the toilet!' Fuck you, TTLG, for being so much fun back then that I found myself hanging about for these odd five-years.
Yes, I played the Thief games backwards in order of release, and still think DS is brilliant in its own way. Yes, I sometimes say silly things to amuse myself and annoy everyone else. Yes, I drink too much. Yes, I'm a whore (but a lot of Vitamin C killed the AIDS). And, yes, I do truly enjoy spending a little bit of time with all of you.
So here's to TTLG, the best, and worst, forum site on the Internet. I meant to come and go quickly (like I do in RL), but like Stockholm syndrome, I can see the reasons to stay around.

I found this site when I read on some gaming news that Looking Glass had closed its doors, and a link led to a discussion about it here. All my fave games up to that point were Looking Glass titles (UUW 1+2, thief, SS), and I just clicked with the vibe of this place. That was around early 2000.

In 2008 my PC exploded. Had to make do with a shitty laptop for years, and so loaded up a bunch of old games to keep me sane. Googled Thief 2 to solve a technical problem and discovered this place along with a tonne of missions to play.
I think I joined for the discussion speculating about Thief 4. Fast forward to today, and every time I read that subforum I'm saddened by how nutty and fanatical it is. If I was ever that unbearable in the past, then please forgive me.
