That's a question I've been asking myself for years. Every fan mission I've played so far has unique sounds and ambiances. I wonder how they make the sounds. Do they use a special program?
I'd like to make some of my own if I can. Does anyone know how I can create unique sounds? Excuse me for sounding naive.

Well, as far as recording, a good free program to use is Audacity.
Often, we'll also just steal sounds from something else.

It depends on what we eat.

It depends on what you mean by sounds. Music is usually excerpted from others' recordings, but a few authors make their own, such as sterlino. I've made some of my own but never used in a mission. For sound effects, I generally look for them on royalty-free sound websites, but have made a few myself.
Also, this thread probably belongs in the FM Forum more than here.

If you want a composition / synthesizer program, a good one is Fruity Loops (which I moved to recently after using Cakewalk for the longest time). Helps if you have a keyboard so you can play the music into it, but not required. It's not free, but there's a free (

I have an older full version of that, which is now called FL Studio I believe. I've used it a little but not gotten into it much.

I remember when FL Studio was Fruitloops. I got really into it back in the day. I have a massive directory of samples and songs I made when I was in high school, and a few from when I was in college. And they weren't half bad! Good times. These days I just play music on guitar or piano or listen to Pandora when I'm in a music mood.

I've heard really good things about Absynth too.
You also have to know what you want to do, because each program is geared towards different things. FL Studio is about making and mixing tracks. Absynth is a synthesizer for making strange new sounds, very good for atmospheric & environmental ambients I'd think, and you can even run it with FL Studio. Audacity is about pure sound editing, good when you're just cutting and modifying a sample you found somewhere else. On that note, YouTube is a vast mine of sound you can rip with Firefox's "Download Helper". (Just always remember to copy down the source so you can give credit, and I like to ask for permission from the creator.) Then Google to find a program to convert the .mp4s to .ogg or .wav soundfiles. There are also a number of online depositories for free ambients you can use. Ableton and Reason are other programs I see people talking about, but I don't know about them.
