I've been looking for ambients and found a few that I like but they are in mp3 format and that doesn't work for thief. I tried opening them and then overwriting it as a wave file but that doesn't work so I am really bummed :eww: So since I have no idea on how to correctly convert them I thought why not ask the useful forums  So how do you correctly convert mp3 files to wave files? Please I need to know as I really want to use these sound files as I really like them :(:tsktsk:

I´m using Audacity.

Audacity will do it. Open the file-->export it as wav.

Audacity will output PCM (uncompressed) WAVs fine, but they are huge. Thief's WAV files are compressed using IMA ADPCM, but the last I checked Audacity, its IMA ADPCM files did not work in Thief. I use the old Sound Recorder from Windows XP, which does the job nicely as long as you don't need batch processing. Since most folks don't have XP still sitting around (and they dumbed it down starting in Vista), you can get the old version here: (

It will not open mp3, though, so save it as PCM WAV in Audacity, then open that in Sound Recorder. Then just save it and click Change and set the format to IMA ADPCM. You can choose mono also if it's a voice file or even music that will be played like on a victrola; ambient music that will be used as an environmental ambient should be left stereo.

(
http://www.nch.com.au/switch/) Switch Sound File Converter Plus from NCH Software works fine too. It's not free, though there is a free version for non-commercial use.

I have Switch, does it output IMA ADPCM that works with Thief? I'm not sure I've ever tried. It also will do batch processing.

Heck, even Foobar2000 does WAV conversion. IIRC WinAmp did as well.
I think NewDark plays OGG files natively, but I haven't tested this. That would certainly be better than more hissy ADPCM files.

@Yandros- I'm using Windows XP so that won't really be a problem :cheeky:

Agreed on OGG, ZB.
Sneaky - ouch on XP.
