Hi all,
I find that choosing an FM is among the hardest decision I have to make. I don't get much time to play Thief and as a result, I don't get around to playing FMs very often, and when I do I find it very difficult to find one that I like (I'm not quite sure why this is).
So my question to you is: how do you choose an FM to play? Do you play all of them (and thus just pick the latest)? Do you browse this forum for missions that appeal to you? or, do you spend 30 minutes browsing FMs and never get around to playing any at all, (like me) :ebil:
Any tips are more than welcome.

It is a very complex decision. Since you have time constraints, as we all have many times, I would recommend some of the more recent FMs that are smaller and quicker to play versus some of the older ones that may take days/hours to complete. It also helps to find FMs based on which Game of Thief you're playing. Thief2/Thief: The Dark Project/Thief:Gold/Thief:Deadly Shadows. You can check on this site for FMs or several other sites for example: (

My solution is very simple: I play them all.
Or rather: I *try* them all - at least the ones in the languages I can understand.
I indeed finish most of them and some get the really thorough treatment with all secrets (often with the help of this forum).
However, some are either just not my cup of tea and get aborted. They are either tiresome (running around forever with nothing much too do) or too violent or something else that bothers me like a gazillion of bugs.
But as most missions are of at least good enough quality I usually don't have much to complain.

If you have time to use for playing, then, look at the title, some pics, the readme to know a bit the story, and then, if you feel interested => Try!!
There are no bad missions ;)
Just a couple which should be fixed...as mine...
If you want to know something about my missions => I manage to "upgrade" them ALL. (or to remake if necessary...)
Because they are complex in matter of effect, there are bugs, even if you can win them... If you want fun, you can try it anyway just to compare them to their upgraded versions :D (that will take a while, so take your time :p)
But you have many & many other cool missions!
Check in Youtube Bentrax's previews or Fen Phoenix's "Let's play", you could find your happyness.

From old time scouting I just know the great classics (and there's surprisingly much of them) and I still haven't gotten around to playing a lot of them. And then there's a whole lot smaller, "obscure" FMs, some of which provide some special experiences too. Lately I also just play every 3rd new one that comes out, rarely an oldie. I still have to finish Calendra's legacy, for gods sake. :D All of Purah's FMs that I had played are very special indeed, especially Calendra's Cistern. Lady Rowena's "The Tower"... Ottoj's "Third Time's the Charm"... gumdrop's "The Cistern"... I could go on and on.
Ah crud, and I abandoned my FM yet again. I was doing so well, until uni took nearly ALL of my time.

I maybe enjoy browsing and choosing the missions more than actually playing them! And I consider myself a FM newbie, probably having played only around 10 by now.
It depends on my mood, but the unwritten rule is that the next mission must not be of the same type as the previous one. E.g. after playing Rowena Curse, I opted for the more prison mission, followed by again a horror one (Seven sisters), and I am currently playing Art of thievery.
I mostly use the Search engine, to search for certain type missions or visit the megathread of the FM types. Another "rule": I tend to play horror/zombie missions in spring or early autumn (Inverted manse), while mansion missions in winter, because... well, it feels so warm in these big places, the candles, the fireplace... :D I always look just the readme and never the screenshots. I rather browse 1 hour in the forums, than to abort the FM. When I choose one, I MUST finish it.

I`m playing Thief for a long time now, I just started to download 1 FM, played and download a new FM, and on and on, 500+ FM`s later i`m still doing the same. Thief isn`t a Game.....It`s a Life :-)
Just kidding.....Just download and start playing and have fun....:thumb:

I would be willing to bet that the majority of the people here just play them all, though I'm sure people have preferences for what to play at any given time. If you are looking to narrow down your choices, you might consider reading some reviews to get an idea of what a mission is like before opting to play it. You should start in the (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=124349) General Fan Mission Review and Discussion Megathread. There is also a list of other sites with reviews in the (

I'm one of those who play them all. I'm always checking ttlg for new missions at least once a day, now that (
http://thiefmissions.com) http://thiefmissions.com hasn't been updated in a while. Lately though I've been replaying some old missions that I played over 10 years ago while I wait for the rest of the Halloween Contest ones. I find that the majority of missions have excellent replay value. My dream is to come here one day and find like a dozen or more new missions. Right now I'm in the middle of "Invasion". Not many missions have scared me like this one has.:thumb: "Island of Sorrow" is next. Even after trying some suggestions on the forum there, I can't seem to get any of the DarkMod missions to load, which really sucks, because I know they would probably keep me busy through the long winter coming up to at least the spring. I admit it, Thief Fan Missions are like a highly addictive drug to me. This may sound corny, but playing this game has been very therapeutic and has helped me through some tough times in my life over the past 12 years or so, providing me with a temporary escape.
