Hi folks!
Well, the title speaks for itself. How do you decide which FM to play when you don't have idea?
I often find myself in a situation that I can't chose which T1/G or T2 fan mission should I play. The "problem" is not choosing between games but between hundreds of great fms. There are many great ones out there, lots of them with great replay value.
Although the purpose of this thread is not to praise certain fan missions, but I must bring a few examples. For example, after playing huge FMs with big influence like Godbreaker or Broken Triad, sometimes I sit looking at the list of downloaded FMs and just can't decide.
Any ideas are welcome!

It depends on my mood and amount of time I have. I play 1999/2000 T1/TG missions when I'm in a nostalgic mood. When I need some relaxation after a busy and stressful day, I choose simple mansion burglaries. I play huge FMs or campaigns when I have enough energy and time to ponder upon difficult puzzles and such.

In before someone says, "Just play them all!"
But seriously, I struggle with this sometimes, too. I don't have any consistent system or suggestion, unfortunately. I guess I kind of do what Aemanyl describes, although I'll integrate newer classic-styled missions into the mix of missions from 99 to 01.
Sometimes I re-read old threads where people discuss different missions and go with whatever piques my curiosity based on that discussion.
Occassionally I'll go through all the missions in a particular contest, or play all the missions by a single author, but mostly I look for an intuitive spark to point me towards a mission after reading a thread on here or at the TDM forum.
I tend to mix replays with new plays. If I haven't played any FMs in a while, playing a mission I know l loved helps me get back in the mood for Thief.

It's hard when you've played hundreds of them to find new ones, so you just kind of go through lists and try new stuff.
Before that though if I found an author I'd liked something from, I'd play all of their other stuff, or look at contests and try all of the missions in them. I took long (years long) breaks from playing missions so it wasn't as easy as just playing them as they came out where you'd play maybe 20-40 a year and keep on top of it.
I also like replaying older ones I really liked but haven't played in a long time. I recently replayed Broken Triad, my 3rd play through of it and still really liked it. Seemed pretty fresh after 5 years, the last time I played. Some elements seemed not as good as I remembered but others were better appreciated.

I find the
Brief summary of all the missions thread - (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=148090) - really useful to see if anything gets my interest. Or the
Fan mission listing by type - (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=144797) - when I'm looking to play a particular genre/style/faction etc.
As Twist says, reading the "discuss different missions" type threads can be useful - I've discovered a few FMs I've not played that way. But yeah, sometimes, I do look down the huge list of FMs and cannot choose from all that sweet, sweet candy.

For me it just comes down to my mood and time available. I typically just look through the thread Fan Mission Listing by Type and make a selection by whatever strikes my fancy.

Interesting you should ask this, ticky. Over the years I have amassed a list of missions that have either been recommended on forums or through a personal message, ranked high from contests or review sites, or simply suggested as good missions worth playing. This list just went through a major overhaul and I now have it in a spreadsheet, with all other missions in a second sheet (those that have not been recommended). The first list amounted to a total of 595 missions (campaigns count as multiple missions), while the second list only to 513 missions. What remains are missions I have already played (not included in either of the aforementioned sheets), which isn't that many to be honest. Sometimes I have a specific author in mind and will pick one of their missions I haven't played before, but more often than not I prefer just picking at random. I like letting chance choose for me. Strange perhaps, but that's me. :p

My goal is to ultimately play all mission so I play them in chronological order. I have played all the T1/TG FM’s (done it twice). I am playing T2 missions in order. The challenge is I don’t think there is really one complete accurate list. I found most missions enjoyable except for the ones that are impossible to figure out without a lot of help.
