I'd rate them as such:
T1: A
T2: A-
T2X: A
T3: B+
Widow Moira and the seaside mansion's probably even more memorable to me than The Cradle.
Its many departures aside, the free-roaming part of the game gets more than its fair share of the flak from the purists. The reason is apparent at first glance: it's simply not very well done. The cityscape is small, restricting, segmented by loading zones, etc. But there's more to it than that...
It specified in rigid details certain aspects of the Thief fantasy world that originally exist only as a part of the imagination of the player.
In addition to various technicalities, purists lament cus T3 failed to meet the standard of their own wishful thinking (whatever that maybe). That's probably the critical difference b/w Deus Ex/IW and Thief/T3 comparisons, where the criticism for the former is practically universal.
I'm glad the purists have pooled their efforts for The Dark Mod (I can't wait to be honest), cus if Thief does get another go as a commercial franchise, I'd expect user-friendly features in the same T3 veins.

Well, at least they got rid of that silly forward leaning. Yes, right in your face. But you cant see me you know. Because this is Cragscleft and Im the master thief. Ill lean right into the middle of your little guard box stare at you for 5 minutes and then knock you down! Straight in your face. SURPRISE! Never seen that coming. And after all my feet are hidden in the dark, right?
Forward leaning didn't cause that bug, and it could have been fixed without getting rid of forward leaning. They just didn't want to be bothered creating a 3rd person animation for it. Not to mention, body awareness would have completely screwed it up anyway.
We have forward leaning in TDM, for anyone who was wondering. :)

Forward leaning was most useful to look over edges.

It made it evident. So I'd rather do without it.

They could have disabled blackjacking while leaning. Easy as that. Anyway I see your point. But whatever the reasons I prefer how TDS turned out in this regard.

I trust you will do it right then.

Exactly - that's the main problem with body awareness in T3. The first two games took into account the 3-dimensional aspect of hiding and exploration - for which forward leaning is a must. The levels in T3 are much more linear and 2 dimensional - when in T3 was it ever vital to lean over the edge of a balcony to see what was going on? Almost never. The limited use of 3-D space (limited by the restricted use of the climbing gloves) seemed to negate much of the use for forward leaning. Still sucked though.

It would be more logical to fix the issue of being able to remain in full shadow, even though only your feet are hidden. ;) You have to remember, there would still be circumstances where the player could lean forward and actually be completely hidden. It wouldn't make sense to disable black jacking while leaning forward, you would then have to do it for leaning sideways as well, but all that would be rather forced.

Yes indeed. However the major exploits could have been adressed by a simple hotfix whereas the main issue at hand probably couldnt. Being hidden when you shouldnt be is one thing, being able to blackjack when you should be in plain sight is another. It totally breaks the balance of the game in some parts. And there is still that other issue, the frontal KO (of a guard in search-mode) while leaning forward which wouldnt be affected by the change.
On a sidenote, you dont need forward leaning to look over edges. Leaning sideways works about as well in TDP.

I particularly enjoyed leaning forward + to the side to blackjack guards around the corner without being seen.

If you are new to THIEF, then I can accept your B plus. If you are a veteran, you need to rethink your "score".
Nobody needs to rethink their score, because it's all opinion.
I've been playing Thief since the first game, although I was never able to entirely finish either Thief 1 or 2 because of computer malfunctions.
When rated pureply based on enjoyment and emersion and atmosphere and all that other good stuff, I have to give Thief3 an A. I highly disagree with most people here, as Thief3 is my favorite of the series, and I've replayed it through countless times.
Of course, including all the technical aspects such as the area being devided up into cells and the occassional flaw (although my game never seems to malfunction as badly as people here say...), it must be lowered to a B. But it's very easily one of my most often-played games.

I just finished t3 and was somewhat disappointed by the ending.
