One should go in knowing what to expect graphics-wise, as they would go into a game of Lego Batman, not expecting the world to look like Batman: Arkham Asylum, for example, and teh grafix are not so much a hindrance.
I'm so glad to no so many people who are not hung up on teh kewl grafix!

Thief gives me something I can always come back to. Sure I get burn out, and wander off to other games for a while, but I always come back to Thief, and every time I find another gem of an FM tucked away among the mediocre ones, it's like the first time I played all over again. Having something so immersive, and so comfortably famiiliar to lose myself in when I badly need distraction from negativity is priceless to me.
And, having found this fourm. I cannot think of one other place on the internet that has kept me coming back so often, other than perhaps second life, and for a forum to be tied for attention with a virtual reality ought to say something about the forum and the people in it. No matter what new game I try, or what new modding and modding community I mess about with for a while, I always come back here. This forum is my internet home, as important a daily stop for me as the home page I've used for the last 10 years. I've met a lot of great people here, some of whom inspire me. Even some of the trolls and flamers on here seem to be a cut above the average. Zylonbane has made me spit my drink in amused surprise on occasion.
How does any of it change my life? It gives me comfortable places to retreat to in good company when life gets stressful. Call Thief and (usually) TTLG part of my Zen.

It made me into a snooty, self-righteous bastard with very specific gaming tastes (and unrealistic expectations) who can't even look at most of the modern run-and-gun FPS games (that is you Call of Duty  ) because their increasing popularity is preventing the development of more Medieval, steam-punk-type stealth games like Thief. Come to think of it, that's not really improvement. I was much happier, wallowing in my ignorance, playing Doom and Half-Life, before I found Dark Project :( . Moral to this story? Thank god for Thief FMs and various rpg games over the years such as Demon's Souls and Fallout or I would probably go quite crazy.

Yup, that's true. It ruins you for most gaming for ever...

It made me realize what I want to do for a living (art & graphic design) and as I do it now, I think it's safe to say that Thief had a major impact on my career. Without it I'd probably have a really boring job right now. :weird:

Before Thief I was pretty much a computer illiterate. Installing the games, getting FM's to work, working with dromed and learning how to create and implement custom content all went a long way towards becoming computer literate.

Ain't that the truth, but there are even worse fates. The last game I bought (outside taking advantage of the $1.75 The Nameless Mod offer) was Stalker; it was good, but too time-consuming in face of all the level editing that took over my computer gaming time (which itself is shrinking with more and more RL commitments :p). If the question comes up whether I should spend my time with some random game or in an editor moving brushes around a CAD interface... the editor tends to win.

I've gotten to know some awesome taffers who like to talk about the same sorts of things I do and who understand my obsession with a 10 yr old game. The game itself has taught me patience and the merits of thinking before I leap into things which I carry over into RL. It is also the game I turn to over & over when I need a respite from the drudgery of RL.
