How did you play when you fist got Thief?
I was over fully aware of the stealth issues in this game, so I always thought gaurds were super sensitive. So, I would just cower in a dark corner for an hour. It was the worst thing ever to be spotted by a guard, really, THE END OF THE WORLD. I would buy 1500 water arrows, an shrowd the map in TOTAL darkness. Man was I paranoid. I also would sit there, waiting for a guard, instad of going after him.
How do you play now?
I love to be chased around by guards, mostly because I always laugh my head off. Save before, of course. After playing T2X, I learned that water arrows should not be a crutch. When ever there is a situation were 1 WA can get me through the area quickly, I'd prefer the challenge of sneaking across the lit room to take care of a guard.
Now, I oftern use light and sound to my advantage, to lure guards to me, then use the lean+bj method; dispatching up to three guards in a row.
And, I know how to use darkloader.
How about you?

I used to be incredibly paranoid too, but once you get to grips with the AI and stuff you learn what you can and can't do. For instance, I barely ever use water arrows anymore, simply because I know where the best places to hide in and also because I'm so used to the maps that I know which lights must be taken out.
I also used to be fairly conservative with my moss arrows and other inventory items (flashbombs, mines etc...), mainly because I was saving them for when I really need them. Of course, now I know when and where to use them.
One of the funniest things I've found in Thief 1 and 2, is that it's entirely possible to play it rambo style, save perhaps against the bots (though it is possible). Sometimes I've just thought fuck it and slaughtered a dozen or so guards so I don't have to bother sneaking about in a particular area. When I first tryed that sorta approach I was always confused as to how you're supposed to stay alive. That is until I realised that Garret can outrun pretty much anything in the game :thumb:
Hit and run for the win :P

I remember I was at the house of this russian friend of mine, and he was playing the demo to Thief 1, and when me and my other friend talked he said with this russian tone "huush, they can here you". He just kept at it too, we wasn`t allowed to talk at all:(

At first I was really clumsy when it came to stealth but it didn't matter because I was too absorbed with trying to perfect my "bow-sniping" techniques against the gaurds, and flash bombs were mana from heaven, used to buy all I could find because it was the magical "screw-this-I-don't-feel-like-being-chased" bomb that would get me out of any unexpected bump in with the guards.
Since then my nocturnal endeavors have become quite a bit more refined (and yet I'm still learning new tricks from time to time). Now I'm more attuned to the enviroment around me and not just my equipment and would prefer a scouting orb over a flash bomb any day. Of course it is still nice to break the tension of sneaking with some undead purging once in a while when I have the means to do so.

The way the game has you cowering in the corner when you first begin is a good thing. When this wears off it's only because you've learnt the technical limitations of the AI and how to exploit them.
The game initially gives you the feeling that the guards are essentially living breathing human beings and as such, keep you in fear of what they are capable of. "OMG did he see my sillhouette?? OMG his snoring broke its rhythm, did I disturb him?? OMG his head turned this way, did he notice me??"
Once you learn (through playing for years) the limitations of the software, the atmosphere that LGS worked so hard to create is that much less immersive.
When TDM comes out, we will have you quaking in your boots again.

I'm still a lousy player! I enjoy the game but find it frustrating 'cos I get lost too easily. I would agree with the other posters (Postees?) that my impulse to fight my way through guards was the first thing I had to quit *. The game is more enjoyable if played stealthily. It's also more of a challenge if you only take the minimum of equipment. Too many gadgets and you just get involved in finding ways to use them up, (like putting out every light in the mission, or gassing every guard.) which I find tends to detract from the achievement of completeing a level.
My Girlfriend sets out to ghost EVERYTHING at the hardest level she can, which I guess would be the reall objective of a thief.
*(Still like banging them on the head and then dropping them down sewers or into crates, cupboards, sheds, other peoples beds etc.)

Well, the thing with T1 and T2 is that you can slash your way through. (Though I didn't always have the guts to. Damn, them Haunts scare me!) Then I got the Deadly Shadows demo and was stuck with that lousy dagger.
That would be when I learned how to ghost. :cheeky: I sneaked through the first game quite nicely, skipped half of the second (Yawn. I didn't care for TMA much), and I'm halfway through my second try at T3.
I'm still very blackjack-happy, though. Nothing like giving a rambling Hammer a good *THWACK* on the head. :p
PS: I also find myself running to dark corners in Unreal Tournament. Ahem. Think the habit's gonna stick.

I used to love messing around when I played Thief, for example playing with the physics and irritating the guards, knocking them out and sticking them in the fire. Or throwing them off large cliffs and hearing the satisfying groands of death. I only play DS now and you can't do that so I just admire the fantastic graphics.

I don't have the same respect for guards now that I used to have. I still remember how intense everything was, when I still thought I had to move an inch at a time or else they would hear me and kill me on the spot. I miss that feeling! Now I try to reinvent it by trying to ghost (to the best of my ability).

:) I'm looking forward to try out TDM, it seems promising and will hopefully give me some of that intense feeling again.
