I still have trouble with the undead. Hammer haunts in particular, but even your common-or-garden zombie is enough to make me freeze up in the game.
The only time I completed Bonehoard in Expert was in Thief Gold, when I ghosted it. Zombies are OK if they don't see me, but once they do, and shamble towards me with their wheezing, rotted lungs, I panic, and sometimes quickload. ):

I think everybody's first go involves mountains of unconscious guards and extinguished torches in every corridor.
These days, if I have to use a water arrow or my blackjack, it's like admitting defeat... so I don't! :D
Only if I'm absolutely positively sure I can't ghost through something will I use a consumable item or knock a guard out.. and part of that, to me, is the fun factor. If I leave the guards unconscious behind me, I know I can just run around, leap onto metal grates, scream at the top of my lungs... but if they're all still up and about, there's a much more compelling reason to be thiefy.

Hmm, I, too, remember killing guards WAY too much. I used to never use the blackjack at all. I'd just go head-to-head all the time, instead of sneaking around. But if I did happen to knock out a guard I'd be quick to toss him in the kitchen fire or water (oh wait, I still do that...).
I also remember being TERRIFIED of zombies. I used to freak out whenever I saw them. I still hate them more than anything else in the game, but I can deal with them now at least.

The game initially gives you the feeling that the guards are essentially living breathing human beings and as such, keep you in fear of what they are capable of. "OMG did he see my sillhouette?? OMG his snoring broke its rhythm, did I disturb him?? OMG his head turned this way, did he notice me??"
Once you learn (through playing for years) the limitations of the software, the atmosphere that LGS worked so hard to create is that much less immersive.
Sounds like you taffers need to try out the ultimate difficulty mods at The Circle ;)

I do agree that gameplay and immersion suffers from intimately knowing the mechanics and shortcomings of AI implementation. And I actually haven't gotten around to trying either of these difficulty mods yet; I think I'm actually telling myself, "*whine* But I
like it really easy" :laff:

I do already have it installed, but most of the FMs I play have their own dark.gam, so it doesn't work.
When it does work, I feel sufficiently challenged.

If anything, I find myself wishing other first person games were more like Thief with regards to stealth. That is, you can get into a shadow and be assured by the game that you aren't easy to see at this point in time. Sadly, even games which ask you to hide generally don't give you much of an aid to indicate how stealthy you are being. The main exception being GTA: San Andreas which gives you an audio clue when you are hidden in the shadows - although, it's an all or nothing kind of thing.

In the beginning I only had TMA, and I would not go into the basement in eavesdropping... I got such a fright when I was telling mysefl "it's okay, it's okay, there's nothing there, just keep going" and then there was something there, it flitted past a gap up ahead, and then another one appeared behind me.
Gervasius' library was worse though. Just hearing it made my skin crawl. I had to take off the headphones if I wanted to go through it.

The one thing that I did differently in the beginning was stopping and listening to every NPC conversation from beginning to end. Every single time. There was just so much comedy to overhear! That was before I figured out that a conversation was also an opportunity to sneak past. Then, when I got Thief Gold and Thief TMA I found myself doing it again the first few times through.
Truely, "They just don't make bears like they used to."

Now I have to shave my face once in a week instead of once in two weeks around the time I played Thief for first time. :p
