Whenever I start a new mission, I always go through my inventory to see what trickery I have at my disposal. Last night, I was playing an FM (as I do most nights), and one of the objectives was to find the rest of your equipment. I took stock of what I already had: a blackjack and my lockpicks.
First thought: I'm set.
2nd thought: Water arrows would be nice
3rd thought: Rope arrows too
4th thought: I'm still set.
Everything else is gravy. I find myself not even bothering using anything else in most games...oh, I'll occasionally use a moss arrow on loud flooring to bonk that ONE guard patrolling (you know which one), but other than that...I find Garrett to be carrying too much equipment. Heck, I don't even use flash bombs when they're available, unless I set off something undead!
I think that's why in retrospect TDS just doesn't appeal to me as it once did. Too much fire power.
So, what equipment do you like to have in missions? What equipment seems like a waste of space (*cough* sword *cough*)?

Lock picks, blackjack and a rope arrow or two are all you need most of the time.

Amen. Honestly, think about how much power Garrett has at his disposal with the following:
Damage:
-5 explosion mines
-30 broadhead arrows
-8 fire arrows
-holy water
Immobilization:
-5 gas arrows
-5 gas bombs
-blackjack
Evasion:
-5 oil flasks
-12 flash bombs
5 explosion mines are a minimum of 5 deaths, 30 broadhead arrows, if used properly, could easily kill 15 opponents, 8 fire arrows is another 8 deaths. Then let's move to the immobilization category. The 5 gas arrows and gas bombs, at a minimum, would knock out 10 beings, but there is almost no problem in knocking out 2 at least once in a level, so make that 12 targets. I won't even estimate blackjack knockouts. The evasion category can be used in concert with the other 2 categories to faciliate their effect, or simply can be used to escape.
That's 28 targets killed and 12 targets immobilized. 40 targets removed. Without the blackjack. 1 level. Simply ridiculous firepower.
To answer your question, I *need* nothing to beat almost every mission. Lockpicks come as a default in TDS. The items simply allow for mistakes and mayhem.

Yup, too much equipment especially in tds. I felt like I was the nation's arsenal. Just annoying because you don't need them. And btw, how the heck does Garrett carry this much?

1. Regular Arrows
2. Blackjack
3. Flash Bombs

All you need is a Rope arrow. Sometimes two if you fail shooting the first one, but failing is not admitted, secondary you may need a weapon to defend yourself by enemies...but wait, you're a thief, no one has to see you...weapons are futile as they only serve as you are revealed, whereas they are useful only if you fail being a good thief...
Ok, you can use whatever in Spooky missions, but only because undead are just gonna freak you out :P
Finally I found Thief Equipment style very original and fun, but for someone who has played for almost 8 years the whole series 5 times a year some equipment might have lost it's utility because it's beaten by skill...

well, the sword (and dagger in TDS) do come in handy when you want (or need) to slash up some tapestries, crates or barrels. Aside from that, I honestly thought the dagger in TDS looked better than the sword in T1/T2.
My usual equip, though, is a bunch of water arrows, a couple of rope arrows (cause there's always that one that would mean death to retrieve . . .), when I run across gas, I'll save them for when I REALLY need them (too expensive, anyhow). I rarely use flashbombs and the like . . .
If I know, or get that feeling I'm going against a lot of undead, it all changes . . . flashbombs, mines and fire arrows (I save these when I find them too, expensive to buy).

I only need the blackjack/lockpicks, 2 rope arrows, and eventually 1 or 2 flashbombs just in case of. And the sword to smash objects which would block you (wood planks etc...). I don't even use water arrows anymore, it adds challenge.
Still, A few months ago I discovered the "ultimate difficulty pack" for T2, and I found back the necessity to use other stuff, like water and moss arrows, or invisibility potions.

Personally I like the *option* of having lots of tools and toys to play with. But in reality, I use very little. I have the cheat set on my thief game so in loadouts I can pretty much just buy it all.
. . .
And then use hardly any of it. Don't ask me the logic of that.
But yeah, weapons, I use my blackjack most. Can't do without that (well, I *can* but not happily lol), a few broadheads here and there, a few water arrows from time to time, although often I dont' even bother with those and a rope arrow or two. I rarely bother with the other arrows, or the flash bombs and less with mines. Although sometimes it is fun to stop and just play with the equipment you're hauling around for the sheer fact that its there and how will things work if you actually USE some of it. But all in all I use very little past those four items.
I do, however, like having the option to use things if I so choose. So i would not recommend the games be altered to have less.

I didn't even realize in TDS that you could use moss arrows to 'occupy' a guard so you could run until the museum; and it happened by accident when I shot a moss arrow a bit too close to one of 'em . . . next I knew he's stumbling around choking. That was the first mission in TDS I had a use for those arrows . . . I thought that effect was kind of cool
still, the moss arrows stayed in the Bag of Holding +5 - besides, we all know the guards love Garrett's tap dancing abilities on tiled floors!
