Finally I found Thief Equipment style very original and fun, but for someone who has played for almost 8 years the whole series 5 times a year some equipment might have lost it's utility because it's beaten by skill...
Ain't that the truth. Nowdays, for an average moderate to hard mission, I only use the following:
- blackjack
- lockpicks
- compass (it drives me crazy if I can't see the compass; FM-makers take note!)
- sword & 10 arrows (if sneaking up on someone is too frustrating, I occasionally punish 'em by killing the sorry taffers  ). Arrowas are also useful for distraction
- two rope arrows (if there is only one, I get nervous, since there may be places where they can't be easily retrieved, or get lost when I mistakenly shoot them into stone or metal)
I can get by without the rest. And I never really used speed potions, slowfall potions and invisibility potions.

Ok, you can use whatever in Spooky missions, but only because undead are just gonna freak you out :P
maybe that's the reason why tds has so many killing tools... for the people getting freaked out by undead and other such beings :)

I don't think a really good player needs anything past the occasional lockpick usage.
Yes, given the choice there's plenty of us who'd use blackjack, sword, arrows etc. but if every Thief mission contained just the lockpicks and compass and maybe a rope arrow, most would still be perfectly completable.
Assuming one is ghosting wherever possible:
Sword - the only use I ever have for it is for slashing banners with secrets behind them!
Blackjack - not needed for any non-combat purposes
Broadheads - only ever needed for shooting distant switches and the like.
Water arrows - you can usually just sneak past or around bright spots
Moss arrows - just move really, really slowly
Fire arrows - if you really need to relight a torch, fine, but even then, there's flares.
Gas arrows - same as blackjack
Rope arrows - yes, occasionally needed, but even then, it's often possible to just jump and mantle to certain places.
Noisemaker arrows - just shoot a broadhead into a wall, or jump on tile and run away.
So need is a variable term - there are very few missions where you really need any equipment.

I couldn't quite get the hang of the blackjack in TDS at first; seemed like the actual blackjacking motion was so quick and somewhat clumsy that you had to be almost on top of your adversary. It was a little disorienting for me initially. Never did care much for that stupid little dagger either. I ended up trying to ghost a lot at first (except for the few AI which were absolutely, irresistably, and easily blackjackable). So I guess all I really needed at first were the lockpicks and a couple water arrows. I also would really rather have had a few rope arrows instead of having to save up for those confounded climbing gloves. Later on I learned to wield the blackjack with impunity and that's also when flashbombs became handy.
In TDP & TMA I found that all I really needed (usually) were the blackjack, a couple of flashbombs (a necessity for me when undead and/or haunts dismayingly popped up unexpectedly), the sword for bashing wooden things and slashing banners, a rope arrow or two, and maybe a gas arrow occasionally. Oh yeah; and the lockpicks. I don't have the patience to fully ghost a mission, let alone the entire game. I've found there is a certain satisfaction to be had in blackjacking some of those exceedingly annoying AI. Great stress reliever, imo.
I agree with nicked that need is a variable term, but imo it depends on the mission and its objectives. In some missions it's necessary to use a fire or moss arrow or two; in other missions you may not require them.

Eeh, I dont really need much aside from the occasional rope/water arrow, a few flashers for emergencies, my trusty blackjack, and my picks. I only use my compass about 1% of the time anyway (I have a very good memory when it comes to games :sly: ). When it comes to sneaking for me, the higher ground I have, the better. I use speed/slowfall potions only if its absolutely necessary, like if i need to run REALLY fast from a crazed com-bot i accidentally set off or need to jump from a lethally high ledge to escape from certain doom.
