I keep my Thief directory under version control using Git, so I can easily see when something changes. Then, I can commit or revert changes.
You may want to consider using version control yourself. I prefer Git on the command line, but there are other tools, such as TortoiseGit or TortoiseSVN.
You realize nothing you just said is normal, right?

Never. A long time ago, i changed from DarkLoader to FMSel, but nothing else was changed. not regarding engine updates. One bad texture (a grate) is a leftover for ages, i can't get rid off, though.

I don't "clean" install anything - I keep my install versions separated by folder.
/olddark
/newdark
/newdark_necro
/newdark_ep
etc.
each one is in it's own unique folder.
'nuff said.

I can't remember the last time I clean installed, when I moved to Linux a few years back I just picked up the T1 & T2 folders from my old disk & copied then to the C drive in WINE they worked perfectly
I use FM selector to choose missions so probably around the time that came out

I hit my tower with a leaf blower in early spring and fall. It's about that time I'd say.

I had issues with Darkloader years ago but since I used the build-in FMsel I never did a clean install, only patches.
My FM folder is pretty large by now, everything rated and full of tags.

My last clean install was from the CD's in 2000...
Yes, I'm still using my same install from 2000. XD
I don't know how many computers I've transferred that original install on to by now. More than 10 for sure.
That said, occasionally I'd make a parallel install on the side usually for some modding purpose that feels like a clean install, as in I'm branching from the original clean vanilla install. I think I've got three or four branches in that way.
