I'll be 38 next month. My first memory of Thief is playing a demo level of The Thieves Guild, except the textures didn't load on my computer and everything was just a gray slate except for the people. That image just sticks with me. Must've been in the late 90s.
Thief is the game that got me over my fear of zombies. I stood on a table in Return to the Cathedral and stared at them until my heart stopped pounding, and ever since I've loved undead missions.
I wonder how the age breakdown is among active FM creators. I fear the day no more FMs are made.

I first saw an early video demo of Thief while working at Ocean software back in the day (something like 1997 maybe). I think it was from a magazine cover disc. It intrigued me instantly though it didn't seem to capture anybody else's imagination at all, which to me, looking back, shows what a lack of creativity and imagination infested the place at that time. When the game finally came out it ran at something like 3 fps on my machine at home so I was a bit miffed about that. I quickly bought or begged (I can't recall) a 3DFX card and slammed it in there! Things suddenly clicked into place with super smooth game-play and particle FX. In my ignorance I tried being confrontational whilst playing, and was getting into sword fights, and subsequently slaughtered.. until.. the 'genius' of game sunk into my 'stupid head', and the whole sneaky Thief world suddenly made perfect sense - Doh!
I was taken aback by the graphical style of the world which seemed janky, unapologetic displaying odd tastes in interior decoration - just like a real world with real people! The world really did feel alive, and ticked along so convincingly whilst I lurked in the shadows and sometimes just watched or eaves-dropped in silent awe. There was no other game like it!! Everything about it was perfect and charming. Somehow all the pieces had fallen perfectly into place at Looking Glass, and they had a development team that seemed born and destined to come together and produce this masterpiece called Thief! Story, sound, music, voices, acting, cut-scenes, lore, mechanics, programming, artwork, map design it goes on. Looking back I don't think I'd change a single thing in the game, as for the time Thief stood out as something truly original and full of character!
Needless to say I've played the game ever since, and have both a son and daughter (born 10 years apart) who have sat on my knee and been frozen to the screen as we negotiated our way through the old town alley-ways infested with the undead, or trembled in bewilderment as we crept through Constantine's mind-bending mansion meekly as mice for fear of what lay around the corner, or in the next topsy-turvy room. I really do not know what else I'd play these days with all the foul language, and agenda-pushing crap that pollute modern games. The only game that has come close is the Dishonored series which I would also highly recommend to anybody, but it's more like Thief unchained, and a lot less realistic gameplay-wise.
So yeah, Thief has helped me keep the balance through all the years, and I don't know what I'd do without all the great FM creators around here who have my eternal thanks for keep Thief alive! The creative skill and love for Thief really shines through, and could never be truly appreciated enough.
So a huge thank-you to all you taffin' taffers out there - you're pure gold!
I'm 57 by the way.

I'm 42 now. I remember the days when I was a new taffer here. Feels like just a few months passed. But in fact it was 19 years ago. Time is sprinting like an athlete.
