I was eight, my big brother had downloaded a demo of TDP from teh internets and he recommended it to me so I played it, immediately fell in love with it and here I am today. :)
BTW I'll be 18 in two days, yaay!

Thirty-five, or thirty-six--somewhere around there. I hadn't played, much less heard of, Thief until Deadly Shadows. *hanging my head in shame*

I was 15 years old back in 1998 when I had my dad buy TDP for me.
I hadn't actually played the demo or anything, I'd just seen a review for it in some Finnish TV program. When I saw it in the local electronics store I decided to check it out.
Haven't ever regretted that decision :)

I played the demo to The Dark Project at my friends house. I borrowed the demo CD (from CGW) and installed it at home. I loved the level! It must have been around 1998 or 1999. My stepdad bought the full version it for my birthday (along with Voodoo3 2000 PCI but that was not for me) and the rest is history.

Yandros is still a young buck...I was 34.:p
I was 29. I always like to tell this story: Earlier that year I was diagnosed with (what I then thought) was a fatal heart disease. Thought I'd be dead within the year (upon further tests found this not to be true). However, my wife and I lost our house and business and had to move in with her parents on their farm in BFE Arkansas (though the house was really posh). Since I couldn't hardly tie my shoes without help, all physical activity had to cease - no music, no speaking engagements, no exercise, etc., a friend set me up with a little weenie computer and a few D&D games, along with some PC gamer demos. When I loaded up Bafford's I was awestruck, because of about 50 other games I'd demoed, none held my interest - I'd concluded that I wasn't gamer material after all. I must have played that demo level a hundred times before I could finally scrape together enough money to buy the game. The day I bought it, I stayed up for 46 hours playing, got sick, and had to go to the hospital for oxygen treatment (er...I forgot to sleep?).
Yeah, seriously. I was also heavily medicated, so give me a break here.
Thus began my Thief addiction. I've played through all three games along with T2X, Ominous Bequest, 7th Crystal, and now the L'Arsene series with both of my kids in my lap - it's a right of passage for them. I've probably played about 200 fan missions since then as well, written a book about a Thief (not related to the game), pretty much show still show all the signs of obsessive behavior 8 years later. Other than SS2 and Psychonauts, games pretty much suck after Thief.

I was 13 back in 1999 and my friends older brother let me borrow it. I remember having my friend over at my house when I first intalled it with him watching me play Baffords manor. Funny thing is I kept dying and my friend said to me "Maybe you shouldn't kill the guards. It is called Thief after all." Man that was so long ago. :p

What makes me think, do we have any folks who didn't play TDP in such way that Bafford's Manor looked like a graveyard?

I was 16 when I first played Thief: The Dark Project back in 1998.

Considering I played T:G (all I had available) well after having established my skills in T2, I can say that I did rather well; no kills, few spots, and as few blackjacks as I could get away with.
Of course, first time I played the Thief 2 demo, it was a wee bloody, but after about the 2nd game, I got into the (very healthy) habit of patience, and giving someone a concussion... Then throwing them off the roof. :laff:
