I'd just like to add that between NewDark and modern hardware, particle systems can support a stupidly huge number of particles. I'm on what's now a modestly-specced gaming PC (2.6 GhZ i5, Radeon 7800), and I can bump a bitmap disk particle system up to around 5000 particles before noticeably dipping below 60FPS. That's worst-case too, with every particle visible at once. Even at 10K particles the frame rate was better than the first time I walked into Soulforge.
